Battery scraped during backplate replacement - overheating

Hi,

Today I did a backplate replacement for a friend, during reassembly I tried to turn it on before I put the 2 screws back in. It didn't turn on, but it started getting warm and smelled wierd, I opened it up and there was a yellow patch where the black bit of the battery had scraped off. We put the original backplate back on and did the screws up tight. I told him to keep it in his hand. If it starts smoking, gets too hot or catches fire, ditch it. When he got home he removed and disposed of the battery. Will this render the device is less or will a simple battey replacement fix his phone?

I would of stopped right there when you said it started getting warm and smelled weird. Especially if you scraped the battery. Sounds like it got punctured. If the battery started getting warm and very hot then you must replace the battery to get it working again.

Here's a guide on how to replace the battery (Just in case ya know :p):

iPhone 4S Battery Replacement

You can buy the battery via iFixit store from here:

Edit: I hope your friend unscrewed the battery connector and then lifted it up instead of ripping it like some people do. This can cause the battery socket to become dislodged and another one would be required to be soldered onto the logic board. If there isn't too much damage.
