iMac shuts off all the time! ( This one's a challenge )

iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.93 24-Inch (Early 2009)

Hey wizards, here's a nice one:

My early 2009 Imac shuts off unexpectedly all the time. It started a year ago, with maybe one shutdown a week. Then it happened more and more, to the point where it shuts of many times a day. Here's some info:

-It runs on snow leopard. I don't have the original troubleshoot DVD anymore, but I do have the SL DVD.

-It's almost like, the more it turns off, and I put it back on (each day), the less likely it seems to shut off. Almost as if it needs a "warmup" or something, of me switching it on each time. But eventually it shuts of all the same.

-It completely shuts off, and I hear a little "tick" when the screen turns black.

-It also seems to shut down when apps ( even normal ones like internet browsers ) are being used. I NEED to photoshop for my work, but guess how that's working out at the moment.

-All LED lights inside the mac check out, nothing wrong there.

-The fans don't go crazy or anything like that. The Mac doesn't seem to heat up more than it usually does..

Hardware I've already replaced to deal with this problem:

-Harddrive ( new one, and newly formatted with Snow Lion )

-Powersupply ( new one )

-RAM ( new ones )

I don't have the dough to buy a new Mac, and I've already invested in new hardware. I'm at the point where I can cry, because it's making me hopeless. I want to fix it but I don't have any hope left that it can be fixed...

I need your wisdom...

Sure the LEDs are fine when the machine is on, what are they showing when it shuts down.

Dear Mayer, I've read your bio, and I'm impressed! I'm new to this forum, and un-awnsered the comment like you suggested. Watch the LED lights when I turn off the Mac you say? And is that when "I" turn it off, or when it just shuts down randomly? Thank you for your time. This might be the droid... errr... Mac your looking for ;)

Look at the diagnostic LEDs when it shuts down on its own.

Stephan,

I too had this issue a while back but my MacBook (2007) would do the same thing.

From my time on the phone with the lovely folks at Apple, I have learned that it may just be the simple fact that the software isn't keeping up anymore. I was recommended to update to more recent software but as we both know at this stage I can't go any further. I would love to be able to sync my iPhone 5c w/ my MacBook but it's just the OS X isn't current enough for that. If you have already updated the RAM to 4gb or more at this stage it appears that it may indeed be time to completely upgrade to a newer iMac. Keep in mind though, with the new hardware you have installed you should still be able to sell and upgrade to lighten the load on your wallet. The only way I was able to get mine to stop doing this was to upgrade the RAM and start w/ a fresh OS install. Still holding up pretty well but the fan does come on as if it's feeling labored but I use it for music so I built a back up fan platform to keep it cool while running for long periods of time. But other than that I don't see there being much else to do at the end of the day. I hope for you the best.

Hi Brandon thanx for your awnser. Would you know what might happen if I would buy a new logicboard? After buying a new power supply, harddrive, and RAM I don't want to buy a brand new Imac. (Maybe a second hand, same model...)

Brandon. This machine will handle the current OS X 10.11.3 just fine.

I just wish that I knew what it wrong with it, so I could just replace the part and move on with my life. Wouldn't a new logicboard do the trick? I have no idea what else could be the problem next to a new harddisk, RAM, or powersupply...

Well this isn't even an informed answer. Don't be so quick to accept an answer that doesn't solve the problem. Start over and un-accept this incorrect answer. Tell us what the LEDs show when it shuts down.
