My screen goes black and then to a permanent grey color.

Dear Sirs,

My iMac 27", mid-2011, model 12.2, has run flawlessly until 2 weeks ago. I am running OS 10.7.5 on it. I have had a second monitor attached to it to watch movies while I work on the iMac. This has never been a problem. I have a 4 TB miniStack attached to it for Time Machine backup. My HD has about 600 GB on the 1 TB drive.

I work in a small mission medical clinic in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, so have difficulty getting service and will have to repair things on my own.

About 2 weeks ago, the screen would intermittently get "jittery" and then the cursor would freeze up and I could do nothing except turn it off and reboot. Not common, but disturbing.

Then the optical drive failed to recognize some burned DVDs that my other DVD players played. Odd.

I repaired my disc permissions a couple times. Not sure if this did anything.

But 3 days ago, my screen suddenly went black. The computer still seemed to be on, but just a black screen. So turn off and then restart. During the start up, it blipped black and then to a permanent grey screen....for 30+ minutes until I turned it off with the power button.

After 10 attempts, with various combinations of holding down the space bar (no apparent benefit), it started after holding down the C key. I didn't have the start up disk (can't find it) in the drive, so I wonder if it was a fluke.

It has started a couple times, so but went black. I disconnected the 2nd monitor. No help. I disconnect my HP laser printer. No help.

I noticed my magnifyling glass re-index everything. (not sure what that means or if it has any bearing on things.)

If I have multiple windows or programs running simultaneously, it turns off more frequently. Sigh. Sometimes things go haywire on the screen and don't appear normal and get all jaggedy....long trails behind the moving mouse. Windows that are half garbled, etc. That is an indication that it will lock up and I have to restart it.

I worried about a virus, so I downloaded Kaspersky and ran the full scan. No threats found.

Under "about this mac" and the system report, it passed on "diagnostics."

I don't know if it is a video card thing or what? Is there anything that I should replace or upgrade?

Thank you.

Hi,

I have understood that no Apple store or dealer stays close to you. It's too bad because may be your problem is the following:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203787

Perhaps you can ship your machine directly to an Apple headquarter...

But you can make this free trial first:

Update your system which is an old version (10.7 Lion - more recent is 10.11 El Capitan).

Getting an update is easy now as you can get it on line. Launch software update in the  menu and follow instructions. (Or click on "Apple Store - item Update).
