re: 7th gen. ipod nano. does not always charge. requires a rubber band contraption to keep lightning cable connected charging ipod. I'm assuming the port needs cleaning/repair/replacement?

You should start by trying a new charge cord . if that brings no joy then you may need to replace the charging port. this teardown guide can help you through the process .
