Can't remove back cover for SSD upgrade

Asus Q552ub

I recently bought an Asus Q552ub notebook from Best Buy. I want to replace the hard drive with an SSD. I have the iFixit toolkit, and the T5 screws around the edge came off without issue. Using the iFixit plastic tabs, I loosed up all the way around the edges without issue.

The problem is, the back plate appears to be stuck right in the middle of the laptop. Pulling up from any free edge hangs at the same spot in the middle. There are no other screws, but I'm afraid to force it and bend the back aluminum plate or break something inside. All videos and pictures I found on the web and youtube for similar devices in the family, like the Q551, show it just coming right off. Peaking through the various loose edges with a flashlight doesn't reveal much.

Is it possible it is glued or something in the middle? So far as I know, the Q552 is just like the Q551, except it is exclusive to Best Buy. The manual shows nothing about the upgrade process. I'm at a loss. Help!

There is a plastic plate that has pressure pins (the plate is roughly in the center of the aluminum base plate you unsccessfully unscrewed). Around the edge or the aluminum near the screen, there is some reinforcement. (Start gently and slowly) Firm but constant pressure evenly distributed from opposing sides will pop the pins out. Since there is some reinforcing material around the non-shaped edge, there is slightly less liability of bending the aluminum. Wear gloves or something, the edges are wicked sharp.

Hi Daniel, I am experiencing the same situation with a notebook ASUS GL753, after removing the 10 screws it appears there's someting stuck in the middle of the back cover avoiding it to be removed. The back cover is made of plastic and it makes me feel very reluctant to force it. Have you tried this model?

I have a similar model and had to remove the plastic bit from the bottom middle, where there is a screw hiding. Not sure yours is the same but I just lifted up the piece of rubbery plastic with a knife and it was held in with glue so it went right back on afterwards.

Make sure you have all ten screws out , separate along edges apply a bit more force there are some clips around the dvd drive making it seem like its stuck in the middle just need a little effort.

I put a 950 EVO in for a co-worker huge difference in performance.

Wanted to thank mike and daniel for sharing their experiences.

I, too, felt a bit of resistance in the center region when pulling off the back cover. Was a bit reluctant to force it open. Having the reassurance from someone who's already opened it definitely helped with the confidence.

Turned out there were 3 clips around the battery (2 on the top and 1 on the left).

Gently pulling the back cover downwards (away from the hinge) would do the job.

Nice laptop indeed after upgrading to Samsung 850 EVO.

I know that several machines have screws under keyboard.I am not to famillier with that one but that is where you will find the elusive screw.

I have the GL753v laptop. In the center of the bottom plate is a rubber piece in the shape of an L, take a flathead to the edge so you damage dont the rubber. Under that rubber is the 11th screw. After you take that screw out the cover will come off with minimal effort
