How should I free up hard drive space?

I am changing out my hard drive so I thought before I copied my original hard drive to be cloned onto my new one I would "clean it up a bit". Does anyone know how best to see whats taking up all the space on this 100 GB hard drive? I have 3,000 songs or so taking up 9 or so GB and 5 or so movies taking another 10 or so. I have not loaded a bunch of programs that did not come with the unit. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated!

What OS are you running? If you aren't running 10.6 there are some tricks to free up extra space.

try GrandPerspective (donationware) - it gives you a graphical representation of what's on your drive, you can easily spot folders taking up a lot of space

I get a lot of clients who want to "clean up their hard drive". My advice is just pay attention to the stuff YOU have created--pictures, movies, and music take up the most room--and other types of documents.

The rule of thumb is, if you don't know what it is, don't delete it! I've had to rebuild several systems where the owner got too enthusiastic in their cleaning efforts and trashed vital system components.

Since you're probably moving to a bigger hard drive anyway (and if you're not, you should be) then space isn't as much of an issue.
