Water Damage, only powers on with charger plugged in.

Dear friends,

My MBP got what I consider a minor water intake. I went to de Apple Store and you know the story it was not covered.

My MBP turns only with the charger plugged in but not with the battery itself.

It also does not charge.

I hope to hear from you soon.

I had the exact same thing happen to mine. I took it apart, dried it very well, but saw some small scorches on the battery logic board. I'm guessing that the board (one component specifically) is fried so it can't charge/discharge the batteries, this is why the mag safe light stays green . Now I am wondering if I can just replace that board or do I have to buy an entire battery assembly?

Contact your insurance agent and see what your deductible is. Before you destroy it trying to fix it yourself know that water damage can be the most difficult thing to diagnose. Take it to a independent professional Apple guy. It very much depends of where the water entered and if it got to the logic board or could be repaired with a simple keyboard replacement.

Insurance deductible is 1000. The battery assembly is already destroyed as far as I can tell. Not sure I have a independent professional Apple guy such as yourself near me. Do you know of any near Panama City Fl?

They're as close as your post office.

Thanks for not helping. These forums are here help people to do it yourself. That is y it is called ifixit not ufixit.

@mayer, LOL. One of us is on the wrong website. I thought this was a DIY fixing website.

Michael, I've been helping people on this site for 5 years. There is a different in fixing a hang nail and doing major surgery on yourself. Board level repair is not a project for the week-end DIYer.

This will require a board-level repair to fix. You can always outsource one via a Mail-In repair to getting it repaired for you. The alternative is replacing the whole motherboard which may or may not even be available yet considering how new the machine it. Either way I wish you luck!

The best thing to do in the meantime is disassemble the device and scrub clean the damaged area with 91% or higher rubbing alcohol and clean up any corrosion or residue left behind... Also keep it turned off as much as possible! Even attempting to power it on for a brief second can short out components and make it harder to repair.

I opened it and blew dry nitrogen in to every crack and crevice, then stuck it into a oven at 95 degrees with a large desiccant pack on top of it for 8 hours. Then cleaned it with alcohol 91%. If I can find the parts I would like to try the repair myself.

You will need an ultrasonic cleaner to get rid of the corrosion that isn't visible under the chips. If you have access to one or the budget for it, I highly recommend running it through there for about 2 minutes on each side of the board. Make sure its a decent one such as Crest or Branson and warm it up to about 65 degrees C

I have an ultrasonic cleaner at work. We use it to clean scuba parts, would this be the same type of ultrasonic cleaner? Do you know where I can purchase the components? Do you have ic's part number?

door

There is a large variety of types of ultrasonic cleaners. You can buy them from price ranges of $50 all the way up to $900. Anything that cost less than $500 probably isn't gonna do the job nicely. The mixture you should use is 1 gallon of distilled water mixed with 100ml of Branson Cleaning solution. Give it plenty of time to warm up (about an hour) and run it through.. cant hurt to try.. soak the board in alcohol afterwards to prevent the water you just put it in from causing more corrosion. Let it dry 24 hours and try again. As far as components go, you can buy "dead" or "broken" motherboards on ebay and take components off of those to repair your own board. Wish you luck!!!

Since the main board is still functioning when power is applied, I would assume the issue is with the battery and its' board.

Try replacing the battery (with integrated board).

I have the same issue, do you recommend a place to buy one? ive looked on eBay and multiple sites but wasn't sure if someone on here has experience buying one.

These repairs are highly individualized. One size does not fit all. Asking your own question here is cheap. Doing the wrong repair is not.

For parts... make sure that you aren't getting something not Apple approved. I prefer macsales.com for my replacement parts. If you 100% know what you're looking for then Newegg or Tigerdirect.

Thanks for the help Brandon.
