As for the RAM not showing up in system profiler, look at my answer below.

Hi! Yes, the 256MB is on the logic board, so once you install the 1GB module, you'll have 1.25GB. All iBooks have some RAM on the logic board (which is both a blessing and a curse, depending on the situation). Because it's integrated, no, you don't have to remove it.

I don't know if you've installed Leopard yet, but hopefully you have at least a 933MHZ laptop, because it won't install on the 800MHZ model due to the system requirements of Leopard.

If the RAM does not show in system profiler then it is either not seated properly, it's bad, or simply not compatible with your machine. Please remove and re-insert the RAM stick, this time making sure you feel a slight thump when it is completely inserted. After that, perform a SMC and PRAM reset, which is always a good idea when introducing new hardware to a Mac. As far as the 256MB RAM, like RDKL pointed out, that is integrated into the LogicBoard itself and is not removable.

Good catch, I didn't notice Jarrymar stated it wasn't recognizing the RAM.

You will definitely see an improvement no matter what you try to run.

I upgraded from 512MB to 1GB and was amazed at how much that mattered. And the install is very easy.

Do a price search online, though, there is a huge range in prices for the same chip. I got mine for about $40 shipped.
