Why is there no espresso coming out when the pump is on?
The machine is on and everything else is working fine, but when I turn the pump on, nothing comes out and I have no idea why.

If there is no espresso coming out of the machine, it is the result of either a lack of water in the reservoir, or a clogged pump. For the lack of water, simply refill the reservoir from any source of tap. To remove the reservoir, check out our easy to follow replacement guide. If the pump is clogged, descale the machine by using lemon juice. For instructions on how to descale the coffee-maker, check the user’s manual on page 10.
Commentaar:
The pumps on these machines are completely plastic and thus not prone to clogging from scale buildup; scale only forms on metal surfaces. Furthermore, when descaling the machine a proper commercial descaling solution such as Dezcal or Durgol should be used; lemon juice or vinegar are sub-optimal solutions and can actually cause more problems then they solve. The very manual you linked states this clearly.

I am having the same problem! No coffee is coming out! However, this the first time I am
Using this. So I have no idea why it isn’t working.

Piston Gaskets O-Rings/Seals. Change them.

I have the same problem as Kara. It is the first time I'm trying the machine, but with already grinded coffee and no coffee is coming out. The water pump works fine because I can get some water out when it's in Hot Water mode. Do you have any idea why there is no coffee coming out? I called the tech support and they told me to try it with grains of coffee. It'll be my next step but I would like to have your advice on this. Thanks

I have what seems to be a similar problem. The steamer works. The espresso does not. When I take it apart, remove the spring, the water runs through. When I put it together and try to make espresso the water back flushes and runs out of the bottom of the machine. The steamer works fine, plenty of pressure. Yet no espresso. Any ideas? Thanks.
ps How do I get inside the thing? I tried removing the screws on top - no go. Then I looked at the bottom it has these flower shaped screws for which I don't have a tool.

There are several things that can cause this. The most common is a clogged coffee basket; on this machine the basket can be disassembled for cleaning, do so and hold the metal screen up to a light to check for clogs. If the basket is clear, it's possible that your coffee is ground too fine, you're putting too much coffee in the basket or you're tamping too hard. It's also possible that the brew head screen has becomed clogged; you can remove this with a phillips head screwdriver and inspect it as you did the coffee basket screen. If you've done all of this and the issue persists then you probably having a failing pump; very common in this model as well as most other Delonghi semi-automatics.
Commentaar:
If it is a failing pump, is that replaceable or worth replacing (cost & service of new pump)?

It can also be the issue of descaling.
I clean the filter, the boiler as indicated in the manual. But after 1 year (!gasp) the machine won't deliver expresso anymore.
I found that it is suggested to descale every 200 brews! So I descaled the machine and it's back, working.
Here's what I did.
Don't load any filter.
Take a container below the boiler.
Plug the machine.
Fill the water tank with 50% white vinegar and mix with 50% of tap water.
Turn the knob for the red light, wait for the OK green light and turn to the most right option (the one that you usually make espresso with)
Wait for hot water to drip, do this during the green lights for 1/4 of the water tank.
From time to time, turn the top frothing knob and let the descaler go through.
Repeat for another 3 times, and
then do the steps again with a second tank with 25% white vinegar and 75% tap water.
Finally, load a full tank of tap water to the tank. This is to wash off the descaler from steps mentioned above.
Load another tank of water if the acid smell continues.
Once done, unplug the plug. When the machine gets a bit cooler, unscrew the boiler and clean the boiler. Put it back.
Clean the frother as well.
That should be it. It took me about 2 hours. My machine was working as usual. Hope you have success too!
Commentaar:
I had exactly the same problem, and followed the advice to de-scale (using 50% white vinegar solution) as you also suggested.
The result is a coffee machine working perfectly again!
I will now follow the instructions I ignored in the past - and clean and de-scale regularly :)

Thank you HLC! I pulled my machine out this morning after quite some time sitting in the cupboard, to find nothing was happening with the espresso drip. This got it working again!

If the water is getting into the de Longhi coffee holder but not coming out and the holder's round metal mesh is clear then the spring-loaded little valve in the middle of the round black plastic mesh-holder may be stuck. Take the mesh off its black plastic base and push hard on the little dimple in the middle of the base. It should give - this is what lets the coffee out of the holder and maintains the pressure to give a good crema. Clean it and reassemble.
Commentaar:
Thank you so much for this! I'd done everything, cleaned everything, de-scaled and just could not figure out why no water was coming out. I checked that little valve and now it's working again!
Many thanks!

Thank you Chris Darwin, releasing that spring has just saved me lots of cash.

Thank You, Chris Darwin, I appreciate your Insight. Though I have a question. Perhaps our model is a bit different. When I pushed hard on the center, nothing moved, tho I saw that I could unscrew the center. Behind it was the conical spring, it fell out. I ran the machine once without the spring, the de-scale solution came out! I thought it was fixed! Ran it again, nothing came out, as in the original problem; no coffee, but pump sounds. I put it all back together, still nothing. Could a pipe cleaner clean out whats further inside, where the spring came out of? Or anything else I'm missing? I appreciate any input! Thank You!

Mark, I think you have been dismantling the mesh filter and spring in the main body of the machine. My comments were about dismantling the coffee-holder basket (the thing you put the ground coffee into). Otherwise I don't know what it is that you have unscrewed.

Thank you so much Chris Darwin!! After descaling I really thought it would solve it but to no avail! However, u came along with something so simple and it’s worked!!! Thanks so much for the tip!

I know it’s an old thread but just one more thing to add. The descaling works, I had this exact same issue and followed the vinegar steps above and yes it started pumping water again without the portafilter. The 2nd issue I had was the screen on the portafilter was completely blocked so when I added the portafilter, nothing was coming out still.
To clear this, you need to burn the blockage away. Since the screen is blocked with dried coffee bits, they can be cleared by burning vs poking each hole out. I held mine with thongs and used a lighter for about 30 seconds a time and rinsed it under the sink after each time. As I held the filter to the light I could see more and more holes opening up. I repeated this until most of the holes were opened.
After doing this with a combination of descaling, it’s like I have a brand new machine.
Thank you to all who posted answers here, it really helped.

If the inlet to the pump is clogged (or, outlet, since that would have the same effect), and no water is getting into the system, how does the descaler do anything?

It’s not the pump it’s the coffee. I throw 2 machines until I figured it . Grind the coffee in medium size or don’t put to much coffee if it’s to fine .

I just got the Lavazza Blue espresso maker and it brew the water into the waste dispenser and does not come out into the cup. The waste dispenser is where the kcups drop into. Anyone have any idea? It’s brand new out of the box.

I think I figured it out. I was also not getting any water but then I put the portafilter in and water came out no problem! The problem is the diagram in the quick start guide doesn’t show the portafilter so I was following the picture. I tried it on whim (why not, nothing else is working) and out came water.

My Problem:
My espresso maker does not work. It makes some noise that starts to dial down and stops without any espresso coming out of the filter holder.
Troubleshooting:
Took off the filter holder and saw that the water was coming out fine. Then I tried using my single filter (that I dont usually use) and espresso came out fine. So the problem was with the double shot filter.
Solution:
A couple grains of coffee were stuck in the tiny hole on the bottom of the double shot filter. I removed them with the tip of a knife and everything works as normal again.

Hello my delonghi dedica stopped working while i was steaming. And now nothing is working. Also none of the 3 lights are turning on when i switch it on. Can anybody help with this issue?

Hi Harsh, First thing to check is the exact plug. Is it working with other appliances? There may be a fuse video on YouTube as well.

Simple thing to check first:
is there coffee grinds between the portafilter (metal handle bit) and the rubber ring it seals into the machine with?
if so, give it a good wipe with kitchen towel/ cloth.
That will help the machine get enough pressure to pump the coffee through the filter.

I finally got it to work; had to leave it running for 12 solid minutes for the pump to prime and for coffee to brew.

My machine is producing no water, even with an empty basket, and the machine is BRAND NEW! This is the first use. It has been properly preheated and I have followed the instructions to the “t.” The milk steamer works fine so there is no lack of water. The compressor rumbles away but no water comes out.

Have the same issue with my brand new ECOV 311 GR Icona Vintage. Some quantity of steam and water comes out of steamer during the preheting period. When I press the coffee/water button, only hot water from the steamer is produced while the filter remains perfectly dry (the steamer knob on the top is turned to minus). The steam button looks like it is working, but I still can't get the indicator light to go green - steamer produces steam almos immediately no matter how I turn the knob.

My steamer works, got steam and a steady stream of water through. descaled it about 8 times, still no coffee. Removed all parts in the coffee section, the spring had no ball inside. Unscrewed the top, there is rusting and minor calcification, but it is mostly around the steamer knob on top of the stainless steel. Inside, the two plastic pieces covering red wires have burned it brown. water lines look good. Why won't water come out of the coffee part? help! also when I was descaling water out of the frother, there were a few drips of leakage coming from the espresso part.
