How to I make it boot from CD

I have an Acer TravelMate 8571 laptop. It has a very annoying fingerprint security option which I had enabled some time ago. I got fed up with it and removed it from the Add Remove Program feature.

Now when I start my laptop I am required to enter a password to power up and then a user password to enter windows. Problem is, I only remember the first password.

Having done a bit of reading, it seems there are three options, of which I am left with 1.

I don't think I am able to chose any other login i.e. administrator

I don't know where my recovery disk is to change the password

So I chose option 3, the insane option of downloading a password cracker (OPHcrack) and creating a .iso cd to boot from.

I went into the BIOS (insydeh20 setup utility) to set the USB/CD ROM as first boot priority and rebooted.

The computer won't boot from the CD. I've tried the .iso cd, a different recovery disk and even an old lunix boot disk. None of them are being read.

So I think even though I've set the USB/CD Rom as first priority, and saved the changes, it's not taking. Am I supposed to press some odd function key or prioritise something else in the BIOS?

Any help is much appreciated so I can start using my laptop again :)

Thanks,

Lex

Most computers will give you a key to press to go into the bios as well as a key to go into the boot device menu. this option give you the various device that the computer will boot from. according to

http://tim.id.au/laptops/acer/travelmate... on page 35 this key is f12.

Hi Josh, thanks for your help. I've managed to enable the F12 option to appear during initial startup, but it doesn't display the USB CDROM option when I enter the F12 menu. Even though I've already set that in the F2 menu to be boot priority number 1.

Any idea why this is this not showing as an option?

Yeah sometimes computers can be a pain. I am sure that you are doing everything that you are suppose to and sometimes the computer just makes things complicated. Just cross all of your t's and dot all of your i's. Make sure that you are saving the changes that are made in the bios as far the boot options are concerned. I know that i have made the mistake of exiting without saving and was wondering why i was still having the problem lol. Another thing that may be very useful is that on some operating systems it is indeed possible to skip the passwords by booting in safemode and once in there you can adjust the user accounts and passwords. I hope that this helps you and that your problem gets solved soon.

Thanks Aebel,

I've definitely saved the changes as when I go to check in the Setup, it is already set as number one priority. Could this be a problem though?:

I've noticed that my CD Drive doesn't initiate until I've passed the power on password section.

So could that be why the Drive isn't being recognised by the F12 menu? And if so, is there a way to set the drive to initiate earlier or something?

This is a bloody pain. Been over a week now of no laptop for such a silly mistake :(:(

I tried the boot in safe mode but it just took me to the password screen again :(

In my Setup, under Boot I have the following:

1. USB CDROM :

2. IDE0 : ST9250315AS

3. IDE1 :

4. IDE2 : MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ892AS

5. Network Boot : Realtek Boot Agent

6. USB HDD :

7 USB HDD :

When I access the F12 Menu, it only gives me these options:

1. IDE0 : ST9250315AS

2. IDE2 : MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ892AS

3. Network Boot : Realtek Boot Agent
