Why is it spitting coffee/grounds from top?

Wet coffee grounds are spitting out the top instead of dispensing into cup making a huge mess. We have tried cleaning, wiping and probing, same result. Where/what is the problem?

I have cleaned the needles both top and bottom and descaled machine.... What else parts are put back together. Reviews on this model are terrible!, say away from it

I'm using Keurig K-cups (not reusable) in a Keurig 2.0.

I have completed this cleaning routine over and over.

The unit is only 6 months old and only used by me maybe 5 cups per week.

It isn't random coups, but tends to be cups from a given box....improperly ground coffee? It then tends to happen to numerous cups until I give the rest to someone else.

Seal is pliable and intact and point is sharp.

Several forums just keep talking about cleaning out the grounds; that doesn't resolve the issue.

(and iFixit...I need more reputation points to indicate an answer wasn't helpful? I'm not "voting someone down" as your pop-up indicates, I'm simply indicating that didn't resolve the issue)

door

The issue will be with the black rubber grommet that should be in place around the base of the top spike. You have to look / feel upwards with fingers. A light will help. It provides the seal on top of the K-cups. If it is missing, it will leak. If it is dirty/ damaged/ covered with dry grounds, it will leak. Another post has a link to where to get replacements for just a couple of dollars if it is missing / needs replacement. Don't be told you are using the wrong brand coffee. Walmart brand works equally well.

door

Seal isn't missing!!! Still pumps out grounds from top! Most likely culprit is the seal is not thick enough to stop grounds from pumping out of the top when the last pressure is used to force water out of kcup! personaly I think this whole design is flawed! Where else are the grounds going to go when pressurized water then air push them through the bottom hole sometimes blocking it pushing the upper hole and other times it goes through the bottom hole!! Absolutely no filtering system or the grounds are too small!! Keurig really needs a real engineer to fix this problem instead of guessers sitting in a board room!!!!

Karri Glass, take a look at the puncture needle areas and make sure that bottom one is not clogged. That would cause all the pressure from the K-cup to go to the top. Step 2 on this guide should help you with that.

My seal looks fine and I guess I do not understand why two different keurigs would have the same issue and one has hardly been used! It is not just leaking as grounds explode and go everywhere.

door

Dennis, I have two keurigs, one hardly used and they are both doing the same thing--pods explode and grounds go everywhere. I gave up and bought a Cuisinart. I have hade it a year and a half with no problems!

door

Dennis, I use only Keurig approved pods. I have never used the refill cup. The needle does not appear bent. I never replaced the seal as I was not convinced that was the culprit. Thanks for the suggestions.

door

Peace be with you. I have the same problem with my keurig. I have an older one maybe two years old that had been working completely fine. I have been using crazy cups in it and they have been working completely fine and then all of a sudden it started spilling over with coffee grounds going out the top but I also had water and coffee coming out the bottom so both the top and the bottom of the cup had been punctured. it just was coming out of both places.

I bought a new keurig. it worked fine for the first 5 cups of coffee using the crazy cups and then it started doing the same thing. I had thought maybe it’s the crazy cups, but it doesn’t make sense to me that they worked for two years on the old one and all of a sudden they’re not and it doesn’t make sense that it’s the seal on a brand new coffee maker so I’m still confused

Any other thoughts

Thanks so much. God bless you

If you look up at the top needle you should see a black rubber grommit around the base (top) of the needle. This presses down on the top of the coffee pod to seal it.

I found ours had come off/fallen out and was laying on the counter top. It looked like a rubber foot for the coffee machine but there were none missing and I nearly threw it away.

Refitting it to the needle cured the leaking problem.

There is an easy fix on ebay that can fix this. IT'S A NEW PART FOR KEURIG BREWERS THAT FITS INTO THE BREWER'S LID WHICH TIGHTENS THE SEAL ON THE K-CUP lid to stop water and coffee and grounds from escaping when the brewer pumps water into the K-cup. It's about $3 and is money back guaranteed. Check the list provided for machine model this fits into.

I had this same problem...did all trouble shooting points several times (even with a keurig costumer support gal ) theysent me a brand new K2.0 and very first cup/pod exploded grounds like a volcano - brand new machine. I’ve wasted 20 pods of various kind that I only order from keurig! I’ve purchased at least 5 machines in my life and never had this until the last two. One less than 6 months and one 2 days old. It seems like the pods aren’t compatible. I found a reusable keurig cup from a former machine and it’s the only thing that works - not the purpose of having a keurig. About to call keurig again to ask for a refund ...have always loved them, but I’m done. Brand new machine, first pod out- so it’s not bent needles or missing seals!

door

I had the same problem, grounds shooting out in coffee. The problem was not the machine, it was the pods. The pods were puffy on the top and had too much pressure. Now when I put the pod in to brew, I push down the top of the pod to release pressure. Haven’t had any trouble since doing this. Machine works great.

Okay so there's a tiny little gasket around the top needle. This had come off for some reason causing my problem, thus the grounds spewing because there was nothing to hold things secure around the needle !$$&*. Solution: Called Keurig (they are wonderful) and they offered to send out a new gasket (free of charge and this was an older machine) along with a special tool it takes to get the gasket installed securely.

I recommend using a flashlight and looking at the base of the needle on top to see if the necessary little rubber grommet looking gasket somehow has dislodged and gotten discarded on the top of a K-cup most likely! Then call Keurig and see if they will help remedy your problem?

Same here--Dunkin Donuts pods are bad. I bought them from 3 different places (including direct from Keurig) and they always screw up!

door

I think Dunkin' and another brand I bought have an inside paper filter that is either too weak or too fine, maybe both. Pressure builds up because liquid can't escape fast enough, the filter ruptures, allowing grinds to flow into my coffee and interrupts the brew process. Many times water/grinds blow out the top as well. If I keep Dunkin' cups on the 10 oz and lower settings I only have a problem now and then; anything higher and they almost always fail. I've cleaned, inspected, etc. Its the particular pods, not the machine.

door

I've found that some pod manufacturers use a foil seal that is too thin to hold the pressure. Cover your pods with with tape and voila!

door

I love black rifle coffee, and was so excited when Walmart started caring it. But after five or six pods in a row of literally spilling out and the seal being broken it's so frustrating because I spent a lot of money on those pods.

door

Always wanted to try this coffee, and finally came across some pods so I picked some up. Unfortunately my Keurig would not brew these pods properly. To solve this I put the pod in the basket and slowly pushed down but not all the way down to create a small second hole, then I pulled the pod out and rotated it 180 degrees and used it as you normally would.

When making the extra hole I don’t push it all the way in so I don’t pierce the inside filter. Doing this allows the coffee to exit the pod faster and reduces the pressure in the pod and eliminates the grounds out the top issue. Bit of a pain but does work!

I've used several cofree maker brands. They all suffer from the same flaw. It's the pods. The pod manufacturers are not using sufficient adhesive to attach the top cover. The cover pulls free from the pod when the coffee maker lid is closed. I've had this occur more often with the Gloria Jean brand than any other but all brands have this flaw.

This is what is happening in my case too. The top cover is coming unsealed around one edge. My problem has been with Peet's coffee Big Bang coffee. I think it also has to do with the pod being too pressurized. I think I have noticed that it only happens when the top of the pod is puffed up a bit before putting in machine.

door

Yes! I think the pressure in a K-cup before it's installed is a key to understanding a lot of the problems with the Keurig. When the cups bulge at the top there is pressure in there. I ALWAYS press the K-cup down to let the bottom needle pierce the cup first relieving the pressure. Only then do I lower the lid which pierces the top of the cup. If this is not done the top can get pierced first... the pressure pushes coffee grounds UP INTO the upper needle causing clogs. This is the only way I can figure how coffee could possibly get into the upper needle. I always press the cup down first to relieve any pressure and I've not had a problem in years. Hope this helps!

I have the Keurig 2.0 Machine.

I've tried some of the solutions mentioned above. From cleaning to rubber gaskets/ring replacements and the unit continues to randomly put grounds where they ought not be. I am using Peets (French Roast) Coffee Keurig Pods. The upper lid is slightly domed.

I insert the pod into it's chamber. Then gently press the upper lid to flatten it out. Having punctured the lower portion of the pod, this releases the internal pressure.

See if your unit behaves as I describe here:

At point of brew, I press the flashing start button. Normally I walk away to do other things while the coffee brews. Somewhere in this process, I get grounds in the coffee cup and randomly grounds spewing out the sides of the machine's head. I have noticed a slight movement in the "head" when the brewing process is active. Just a gentle up and down movement. It took a while for me to actually notice it.

Now, I press the flashing start button, and gently apply pressure to the silver rim, to restrict the "heads" up and down motion. From that discovery forward, I've had no coffee grounds in the coffee cup or spewing outside the machine.

It is a temporary work-a-round, to say the least, but better than having coffee grounds where they ought not be. Please try this and let us know if this works for you.

I just inherited a single serving Keurig and after cleaning it, I made my first cup of coffee with it only to discover grounds were all in it…yuck! I searched on the internet for answers and read this thread. I did as advised and made sure the needles were clear and the black upper gasket was in place and all was well. I then tried another cup of coffee and it came out perfectly. Puzzled, I then dissected the two spent K-cups (Green Mountain brand) to see if the first cup had a problem and yes, it did. After carefully pulling off just the foils, I emptied the grounds and discovered that the defective one had a built-in filter that was not completely attached around the entire top area; a 1” section of the circumference was unsealed to the plastic cup. I repeated the process with the “good” K-cup and found that the interior filter was completely intact and fully sealed all around the top. Long story short, the poor sealing job at the factory had caused the grounds to come out into the coffee. Compare my photo showing good cup on left and bad one on the right. You can see no filter material on the back side of the bad cup where it wasn’t sealed, and the rest of it has the remaining shreds of material where I tried removing it for recycling the cup. A good seal is supposed to be melted into the plastic cup so that it can’t leak out the contents, like the good cup on the left.

My problem was the top around the hole splits making a big hole which the grounds come out of when brewing. Cleaned the needles, punctured before brewing, all to no avail.

I had this issue over a year or so ago! After buying a new brewer and it doing the same thing, I was convinced I had bad k cups! After numerous calls with Keurig I inadvertently mentioned that I had good water because I had just put in a water softener and filtration unit! That’s when the Keurig service lady told me that their brewers don’t do well with softener water! Said use the cheap ole Walmart spring water and my exploding k cups should disappear! I thought they were nuts, but I switched to that water and have had no issue since! I even had the brewer outside for trash pick up and brought it back in to try it one last time. I’m still using it! Don’t use water softener water period! Hope this helps someone else!

I had this problem too, but only with pods that seemed over pressurized. Mostly with Peets coffee pods for some reason. I had to make sure that I put the pod in and pressed down to poke bottom hole and relieve pressure before closing my machine. That worked pretty well. Now I just use the refillable pods since I am trying to eliminate waste. Going green :-)

Kari, It sounds like you are trying to brew with a Keurig My-K reusable cup. Am I right? Check to be sure you removed the cup holder that came with the machine and replaced it with the My-K reusable filter. Here is a link to a video that explains how that is done. But you may still have some spitting coffee because Keurig My-K cups don't really work too well unless you modify the machine with the easy fix kit discussed elsewhere in this topic. Good luck.

Update (02/27/2017)

There is an easy fix on ebay that may fix this. It's a new part that fits into the Keurig lid that tightens the seal on the K-cup lid to stop water and coffee and grounds from escaping when the brewer pumps water into the K-cup. It's about $3 and is money back guaranteed. Check the list provided for machine model this fits into.

It might be the use of K-cups that do not comply with Keurig design. These can cause too large of a hole to form at the top causing a leaky seal. Try using K-cups with the Keurig name, logo or both. The hole that gets made in the top should be more of a small circular nature rather than a larger triangular opening.

My machine appears to be missing the frequently-mentioned grommet on the top needle. However, I was noticing that the issue with grounds in my coffee cup only occurred when I used recyclable pods. The lack of a grommet did not seem to be an issue when I used the non-recyclable pods.

With that in mind, I reviewed several of the solutions that focused on the pods themselves. As mentioned in many of those responses, there does appear to be a visible “puffiness” in the foil lid of the recyclable pods when I compare them to the non-recyclable pods. I’ve been using the suggestion to push the pod (gently) onto the lower needle to puncture the pod/release the pressure. I’ve been using that practice for two weeks now and have not experienced any further occurrences of grounds in my coffee cup.

I tried to use a composatvble k-pod , BOYDS, Farmers, and it seems that the soft filter on the bottom is not long enough to be punctured by the bottom needle but it should not need to be , because of the built in filter not plastic. It seems that the size of the depth is not able to hit the bottom and pierce the pod. So water and grounds leak all over the place . What now?

Two issues with the pods can cause this problem of grounds in your coffee and the top of the pod ruptured. I’ve found when using Dunkin’ pods (and another brand I can’t recall), the inside filter ruptures, allowing grounds to leak out into your coffee. Either the coffee is ground so fine that it clogs the pores of the filter and/or the filter is so fine and/or weak that pressure builds and it ruptures, sometimes causing the foil top to rupture as well, spewing grounds everywhere. The other problem I’ve encountered is a foil lid improperly sealed to the plastic cup. Pressure from inside the pod lifts the edge of the foil and creates a big mess. With the Dunkin’ cups, if I limit them to a 10oz brew, I can get away with no problem most of the time.

I’ve had this ongoing problem for years and finally figured my own fix… poke one small hole with toothpick into kcup prior to using. That solved most of my volcanic problems.

Irony, bought new machine last month and now the machine pokes FIVE holes in top vs one. Sad note, I get about 20 grounds in the following two cups brewed… which is not fun in my chai tea. Now I run two cups of water through after my husband does his coffee. About to give up on Keurig and k cups forever and I’ve purchased 6 + machines over the last 8 years ( home, office, cabin, …)
