Updates Aren't Taking and Now Won't Charge

At first my Surface 2 RT would keep trying to do updates...then I would get a message that the "updates couldn't be done and now undoing changes...don't turn off computer"...that happened for a couple of weeks...now it still keeps saying that but now will not charge...it only works if I have it plugged in...it shows that it doesn't even read a battery...I have tried resetting it several times...no change...I am out of the country for 2 months...help please!!
