My phone came with only 8gb of memory space, and I would like to add more memory capability to my phone. Is it possible to swap out the 8gb for a 16-or higher gb?

Sorry there is no means to add storage space (flash) directly in your iPhone. You could use an external SSD drive to hold your files (vids, pictures or music). Here's a good write up on how its done: How to add more storage to an iOS device
