Digitizer lifts up on the bottom

I have my own repair business and I've done many iPads but I having a issue with one iPad Mini where the bottom edge lefts over time. I get my screen pre mounted with adhesive. My questions are:

Should I be adding more adhesive?Should I buy a roll of two sided mounting tape? If so what size and brand? Sometimes I use crazy glue to secure an edge. Are the professional repair shops cleaning all the old adhesive off first before putting the new digitizer on? It takes more time but is it better? How do I get a really good adhesive seal.

Like Brian said, it is most likely the digitizer cable getting bunched up between your frame and digitizer. Try pulling it towards the LCD with a pry tool while laying the screen down.

I really came to answer about your better seal for iPad adhesive though. There is a certain process we use here at the shop to ensure the best, and longest lasting seal possible. There's nothing I hate more than to have a customer bring back an iPad thats lifting along the digitizer, looks very unprofessional. So what we do is remove the old screen and LCD, then use scotch-brite or some some other metal sanding material, and soak it with 99% iso and then use it to scrub away all traces of old adhesive. It also tends to roughen up the aluminum mounting surface so adhesive sticks a bit better. Once all old adhesive is gone, we use this : http://www.tesatape.com/industry/buildin.... Just lay long pieces of tape around the edges and use an x-acto knife to custom cut it. Leave no gaps. Then after reassembly, we use multiple wood clamps around the edge of the iPad and heat it up with a heat gun several times while it's under pressure. After about 30 minutes with the clamps on it, its good to go. We have not had one single iPad come back after using this method. Hope it helps!

Josh, thanks so much great info. I'll try out that tape. I get my screens with the adhesive on them already. Are you using screens without them and applying this tape? What width tape do you usually get? I also have a wood press that I made to put the iPad in and apply heat. I'll see if I can post a picture of it

The screens I get always have adhesive on them, but it's never good enough quality. I always remove it with a plastic razor blade and wipe away any residue, then make my own adhesive border with the tape from the link I sent you. I get the 3/8" roll, but its personal preference. I will usually take a very sharp blade and split the 3/8" roll in half. Or just cut it as needed. Make sure you get the iPad working right the first time, once you lay the screen down with the tape I use, it won't want to come back up very easily.

And your applying the tape to the body not the glass right? And I got one more question for you if you don't mind. I have two digitizers an iPhone 5c and an iPhone 5 where the glass separated from the plastic mid frame bezel. What do you recommend for reattachment? The same adhesive tape or some kind of epoxy?

I don't mind questions at all. Glad to help. Yes, I apply the adhesive tape to the body of the ipad. It seems to hold much better than putting it on the glass first, for whatever reason. It doesn't have to be the prettiest tape job ever, just cover as much of the aluminum mounting surface as possible. Be sure to trim all tape away from covering the home button area, the WiFi cable, and the spot where to the digitizer cable rests against the frame.

As far as the 5c screens go, I usually just lift the frame away from the glass a bit and put some super glue in. You can just scrape away any that gets on the top side of the glass. Just be sure not to use a ton of it, especially on the sides of the LCD. It's not fancy, but it definitely works and holds up.

Josh, it wasn't easy finding that tape until I realized it was on Amazon lol. I usually use Q-tips with Goo Gone to remove the adhesive and then clean that up with alcohol but I like the idea of the scotch-brite pads. Sounds a lot easier. What grid pads do you use? The gray ones or the red pads?

Hi,

If you are not cleaning off the old adhesive, you might as well not be doing iPads, without cleaning off the old adhesive, the adhesive doesn't get enough strength, besides the fact that there may still be small shards off glass on the aluminium frame still.

As stated above, make sure you have seated the cable correctly. :-)

I always clean the iPad's with adhesive remover and then again with 99% alcohol. I see a lot of repairs not cleaning them to save time but I know that's not the proper way. I make sure the digitizer ribbon is tucked between the frame and LCD edge and not caught between the glass and frame. I done a lot of iPad repairs but I just having a problem with this one iPad mini. It keeps on lifting after a couple of days. I have to check to see if the body is bent at all. Do you think I can also add some crazy glue with the adhesive strips? Have you ever done that? Will that give a better hold or work against each other?

Make sure the digitizer cable isn't getting caught between the glass and the frame. Also check the aluminum frame for warping as the mini can bend pretty easily. In regards to better adhesive google "Bowlertech adhesives" .

Hey Brian do you get your digitizers without adhesive and put your own on? Thanks for the info

i use the adhesive that comes with the digitizers but sometimes i have to supplement based on the adhesive quality. My plan is to switch to bowlertech for adhesive for more consistent results.
