How do I open a Power Macintosh 5500/250

Hey there!

I'm the proud owner of a 1997 Power Macintosh 5500/250. It's the Director's Edition, meaning it has a bit of extra graphics RAM and a Video Capture Card, which is nice, however the CD-ROM drive doesn't show up in the System Profiler (Mac OS 8.6).

From what I can see, there's about three points of entry, but rather than making a mess, I just want to get to the IO and check if there's a dodgy cable or something inside.

I have the OS disks and an upgrade to 9.2.2 which should bring this machine up to its latest it can handle, and then I was thinking of looking at a PowerPC Linux Distro that would get it on the net, kinda.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Erick Watson, download the service manual for your new computer from the bottom of this page. Page 98 will tell you how to tear the beast apart:-)

This beast certainly isn't new, I've had it for a while and let friends' kids play with it (the Performa intro is a nice touch and Sim City runs like a dream on it) however the CD-ROM drive has always needed fixing. I'm JUST getting around to it!

Thanks so much for the link, I really appreciate it. Will post here again once it's up and running :)
