Actually, it's impossible. Apple just recently (May/June) decided to stop signing old firmware. This means that whenever you restore with iTunes, it goes to the apple server, and checks if the firmware is the newest available. Apple started doing this just recently, so there is not great way of preventing it. The best way to ensure you can downgrade your OS is to backup your SHSH blobs using an application called firmware umbrella. This only works though, if you backup your SHSH blobs of the OS that you want to downgrade to, so if you have already upgraded to a new iOS, I am sorry, but you cannot downgrade. You can read more about it here.

there are a few downgrade instructions on the net - but i've not seen any working giude for downgrading the baseband.

i had 2 3g with 4.0, jailbraked and unlocked them and they worked great - i tried them both with and without the multitasking feature - if you have multitasking activated - it could cause trouble - but not because of the "bad feature" - it's because of the many app's working in the backgraound.

double "click" on the home button - the mainscreen should move and you should see all open apps - press your finger longer on an app icon and wait until the "closing" sign is shown on the app's icon, close all open app's and try to use the phone normally.

I restored my iphone 3g to the earlier operating system from the youtube video

it took some trial and error but I got it done, it does show the 3.1.3 in the general info screen

you will need the RecBoot you can get from sebby.net and the firmware you can get from the second

address iclarified "my 3g is back up to speed!!"
