iPhone won't charge but iTunes recognizes it.

Hey guys, I am having trouble charging my iphone 5. I've tried multiple cables (Originals and 3rd party), cleaned the charging port, replaced the charging port, replaced the battery, and swapped mother boards with a working iphone 5. It seems to me there is something wrong with the motherboard but I have no idea if there is a broken capacitor or any damaged tiny parts. I have no idea what to look for anyway and would appreciate some help. Like in the question title, itunes does recognize the phone but it simply will not charge.

This was also the only other similar question I have found on this site and the web but sadly it doesn't seem they were able to figure it out either. iTunes recognizes it while connected, but cannot charge.

Did swapping the motherboard change the issue? What do you mean it won't charge, is it turning on?

The phone will not charge, when I plug in my cable the battery symbol lights up but it stays the same percentage and instead of going up it goes down as I wait. Yes the screen and all other functions work perfect.

And to clarify about swapping the motherboards, I took the motherboard from the iPhone with the no charge problem and placed it into a working iPhone 5. The working iPhone 5 now has the same no charge problem while the motherboard from the good one disappeared from the iPhone that the problem started in. So I concluded the problem lies somewhere on the motherboard.

The percentage only goes down? I would suspect a defective U2 chip then.

I have never heard or seen this toic of a U2 Chip problem, I believe this is the culprit because I have searched every corner of the internet for a solution. And when I said the percentage only goes down I meant that it's just not charging like it's supposed to. I've plugged the battery in a working iPhone 5 and placed it back in the problematic one and the percentage is higher as it should be (battery was charged). I was also messing around and I actually got it to charge 5% higher! I'm not sure what I did.

I will probably order a U2 Chip soon to see if this resolves my problem and post what happens here. I have the right equipment and knowledge now.

If you're able to replace a U2 chip successfully on an iPhone 5, you should be able first to pull the schematics and review the battery and charging circuits. You should also be able to examine around the battery connector for damaged/corroded/missing components. iPhone 5 U2 replacement is risky and in my humble opinion should be done as a last result after ruling out simpler defects.

Rewind a bit: when did this start to happen, was it after a bad drop or liquid spill or some attempted repair?

Also use good magnification to look at and around the battery connector on the board. Is the connector well soldered? Traces of corrosion? Any tiny component seems missing, part torn off? Poke at them ever gently with a needle to verify - battery disconnected of course.

Everything is intact. This phone was working previously where it didn't have a charging problem. After I replaced the lock button and swapped batteries that's when the problem started. I was positive this was an easy repair because I made no mistakes and have done this before with success (apparently not this time?). I also have an iPhone 5s that has the same problem.

Usually, U2 IC issue means some or all of the following:

Quick battery discharge; Works on a charged battery until it reaches 0% then won't charge again even though it detects the charger and says it is charging; iPhone not detected by iTunes nor charging. Your case is not an exact match. Which is why there is the possibility that you damaged the battery circuit . In that case, phone will be detected by iTunes but power will not reach the batterY. So look at the battery and charging dock connectors, and around them. While doing this, be extra careful with the components around the SIM card holder. There is one glass chip there that if damaged will render your iPhone useless, as well as others that will affect your lock and home buttons functions.

Is this happening with the new battery? If yes, put back the old battery. What happens?

This was happening with the old, and even another new battery. And I wanted to update but now it's charging again like normal all of a sudden!! The last thing I did was restore the phone to a backup from an iPhone 5c and I got the "This accessory is not supported by this device." So I looked up tons of different methods on how to get rid of this and eventually one of them worked for a while but then I got it again. After being a little frustrated I turned the phone off and left I on a charger (I ordered another original cable because I wasn't sure if mine was). So once the cable arrived I grabbed the phone and when I turned it on it was fully charged and the "This accessory is not supported by this device" message never appeared and it went back to normal! I never got to try the new cable but it works again. I still have an iPhone 5s with this same problem, now that one I'm not sure if someone had attempted to repair it before me or damaged anything but that's my next mini project to figure out

I may have jumped the gun. The phone does charge possiblely only when it is power off and I have heard of this problem before. The phone was at 100% battery life and still does accept a normal charge. The battery life continues to only go down the more I use it.

AS said in the comments it sounds like a U2 IC chip problem. The iPhone 5 U2 IC chip is a very risky repair due to both the under fill on the chip and that is is right next to the CPU of the phone. When the solder balls of the cpu head up inside the under fill they expand and tend to destroy the CPU. Best of luck!!

iPhone 5, same problem. Started suddenly today. It's showing it's charging but battery wont charge and instead battery percentage goes down...

setcsr, in case your phone has not been tempered with, you have to rule out battery and charging dock issue. Then you can conclude that it's a U2 IC issue, which seems most likely with the symptoms you are describing. Google U2 IC iPhone 5 and you'll understand the issue.
