Can't login. Your home folder,which is protected by FileVault, didn't open.it needs to be repaired. To repair and continue logging in click ok. If I do that I get-your unable to log into the user account at this time. Logging in to account failed because an error occurred.

Do you have an external bootable drive? If you do see if you can boot up with it and then run Disk Utility from it.

Correction install disk 10.6.4 Mac book.
Ran disk utility from install disk. Said drive was ok. Still won't allow log in .
Did you write down the File Vault key you'll need it to fix the drive.
Otherwise you'll need to wipe the drive down and re-install everything. Hopefully you have a backup.

You do not have to boot up with an external drive. Start up from OS X Recovery.
For such, you can just press Command R while starting up your Mac. Keep holding on until you see the circle that begins to load OS X Recovery. Let go your hold and wait till Mac OS X Utilities begin.
Click on Disk Utility. Select the drive partition where OS X has been installed. Click on Unlock and provide password because your disk is protected by Vault.
Now, you are ready to Verify Disk, Repair Disk, Verify Disk Permissions and also Repair Disk Permissions. You would like to do one at a time. Once alls done. You're done.
Quit Disk Utility, quit Mac OS X Utilities, and hit Restart. You will be good my friend.

Couldn't get to recovery. Tried to hold command r.
I can get to disk utility by booting up from my install disk. Ran disk utility. Where or how do I get to an unlock part? I have been running verify permissions,and repair permissions. On Macintosh hd and the other one is hitachi HTS.
You'll need to run FileVault to then plug in the key from the external disk.
Which drive do you think you have FileVault enabled? Highlight the partition of that drive. Once you highlight it (click on it), check the MENU on top. One of them (probably 3rd option) would be Unlock or similar. Also make sure your mounted OS X partition is grayed out. Grayed out means locked because of FileVault. When it's grayed out, it would not allow to do anything disk related. You must unlock or say decrypt it. If you see DECRYPT in the menu, you can do that as well. If you do not see menu, you can click on View from finder and then show Menu items. Hope it helps.
Puru, booting off the Recovery partition is only an option if the OP has 10.7 or later installed as the boot system. Only the last generation of Unibody 17" MBP (2011, Thunderbolt) requires 10.7; all the previous generations are 10.5/10.6. So far, Dan hasn't told us what operating system he's using (or which generation of MBP he's using), but he's been trying to repair the drive from a 10.6.4 install DVD. It's possible that the MBP only has 10.6.8 installed.

I'm trying to start up from install disk. Os x 10.6.4. Was using wrong install disk from my old PowerBook G4. Found right disk now trying to get to disk utility.
