Sadly your options are very limited here. Bottom line it's not worth it. Better to look at the other parts of the system to improve to gain as much as you can, or move to a newer system.

Things to look at:

  • Max the systems memory
  • Upgrade the HD to a SSHD hybrid drive

Sometimes just cleaning things up can get you better performance. Free up 1/4 to 1/3 of your HD so the system has some free space to work with. Run a file cleaning tool to flush out the old logs and cache files. Run Disk Utility from m an external bootable drive to fix and disk errors and file permissions (make sure you have a good backup first!). The last thing here is defrag'ing the hard drive. Over time the files do get fragmented so it's a good idea to run a HD defrag program like Disk Genius.

The CPU is on a Penryn CPU on a ZIF socket.

You can take a look here on an upgrade article:

You could upgrade to the 45nm Q-Spec (qualification) 2.8GHz Penryn (X9000) og 3.06 GHz Penryn. That is technically possible. But the speed gain will be about 10%. Not sure if that justifies the work. Something always can go wrong tearing these iMacs apart (my own sad experience).
