3 shorts beeps 3 long beeps 3shorts beeps

Hi, my mac had lion osx and a bootcamp partition with window 7 .working fine. I did the upgrade to yosemite and the try to boot on windows and the mac restart and the screen went black and only the 3 short beeps 3 long beeps 3short beeps is what you get.

The mac wont boot, only the beeps, try to change the HD or reintall osx,but wont happend.

It's like the bios of the motherboard was changed by yosemite or something lik that or the efi rom chp is corrupted...any clues?

Thanks

Your firmware is corrupted! Some people are reporting a Trojan under Windows that is re-writing the PC's BIOS chip. In the case of the Mac system which uses EFI which is similar to the the PC' BIOS but still different it's getting corrupted from this malware threat.

Sadly, once in this state it's very hard to fix. The best solution here is to visit an Apple Store and allow them to fix it.

The next issue here is you have something running on your system in the Windows space that will likely corrupt your system again. You'll need to get a good antivirus/malware program to find it and remove it. Some Mac antiviral programs can clean things up in both the Mac and Windows space

Hi, i don't think it's a trojan, because it only happend after my upgrade to yomesite, i never connect using the windows 7 , i only used to run some software that i don't have in osx..

The yosemite did an firmware upgrade when I've installed it. So i think yosemite it's the responsal for the corruption in the firmware.

Sadly, no. The problem is the EFI is corrupted before Yosemite realized in the install process your firmware was outdated. But because the area it needed to install was in use it couldn't write all of the code down. This is were the malware was sitting.

Just to be clear if you run Windows within BootCamp you will give this malware enough access to do its dirty deed. We had three systems hit as we too run BootCamp with Windows 7. We hadn't but two and two together realizing it was a malware threat that was the cause. Besides we had mostly updated our systems firmware often enough so we didn't have that many that needed the update. It appears the newer firmware is less susceptible to the risk.

So Dan , the solution is to rewrite the firmware in to the efi chip or to replace the efi chip?

Could the Apple service do that?

Thanks.

Re-burning the chip is a bit tricky as you need more than just the firmware. The best solution is to visit the Apple Store or ship it to Apple. We had ours fixed under warranty. Hopefully you'll get it done under warranty as well.

Dan as you see in the beginig it's a 2011 macbook pro, no warranty at all !!!.So change the efi chip is the only solution. I see them on ebay. Thsnks!

Yes, I fully realize you have an older system here. Before you jump off the deep end here changing out your chip (which is not as simple as it sounds), please visit an Apple Store. They often have (as in this case) extended warranty programs.

Getting The chip is the easy part... The hard part is its programming, you'll need to have a means to program the chip using the correct image file for your system and a chip programmer that can correctly program the chip. Did you really speak with someone at an Apple Store? I would try again, maybe you'll need to call Apple directly.

The MX25L6406E chip is located on the back side of the logic board near the microphone & speaker connections. You can't miss it. Again I don't recommend replacing the chip you are likely to have problems!
