Why doesn't my external hard drive appear in my MacBook Pro?

I checked if it's hidden but it's not. It's not in the sidebar too. My Samsung G2 Portable external hard drive lights up and starts with a typical sound when you plug an external hard drive to a computer. If I can remember I didn't drop it or anything but I think my macbook pro automatically forced eject it. I tried plugging it on different macbook/iMacs or even PC computer.

Go to Disk Utility and verify the drive shows up in the left hand column. If it does, it should show the size and manufacture of the drive on one line, than indented below it should show the logical name. Click on the drive and select repair. It will scan the disk and attempt to repair it if errors are found. If they are found, run repair one more time to see if any errors remain. If so, the disk may be going bad.

Did you put this external together yourself or is it a store bought one? The reason I ask is it sounds like the external is bad. You say that when you plug it in you can hear the drive starting up, but it never shows up in disk utility, so it seems to be an issue with the data portion of the drive. If you have another USB cable you can try that, I have seen it many of times that the cable was bad. If it is one you put together, take it back apart and make sure that everything is connected correctly and seated. Than try it again and see what it does.

I bought it in store. OK, I will try that first.

If you bought it in store and swapping the USB cable doesn't work, than you have 2 options. Option 1 is to file a warranty claim with the manufacture and have them replace it. If you don't have a backup if it, this may not be feasible since all of your data will be lost and further more it will potentially give the manufacture to any sensitive data you have stored on it.

Option 2 may void your warranty, and requires you to disassemble the drive enclosure. If you let me know what model it is, I may be able to instruct you on the disassembly. Once it is disassembled you will need to either connect it to a desktop with an open SATA port, or purchase a SATA to USB cable, or a new enclosure. Both can be purchased on Amazon for less that $15. Connect it to your Mac with one of these and it should show up as usual.

Ok, I'll try option 2 because I don't have a backup. My warranty is over so option 2 will be good. I don't have a desktop and I only have my macbook pro. Is that ok? My external hard drive is a Samsung G2 Portable external hard drive. And I shall look for the SATA to USB cable here in the Philippines.
