Early 2011 Model: A1278 / 2.3 GHz i5 or 2.7 GHz i7 processor

What's better? Adding RAM or SSD?

So, I got an Macbook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 and it's getting really slow sometimes when booting, launching application and just slow in general.

Now I got some people saying SSD is thé answer and the best thing to do would be replacing my optical driver (which is broken anyways) for SSD.

But other people are saying I should just replace my 4GB RAM with 8GB.

I know doing both would be the most ideal, but I'm a poor student so I can't afford that. So I'm asking you, what's the better solution? Adding an SSD drive or upgrade my RAM?

SSD Drive is the best. I have a 2008 white macbook that is still running but was slowing way down. I put a 256GB SSD drive (Paid around $100) and it is running like a champ now with only 4GB RAM. Boots up in ~30 secs, programs open in 2-3 sec. It's been amazing.

I'd first replace the Hard Drive/IR cable as they have known defects and can cause the issues you seem to be having. Here's the part I replace with, note the width difference: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable
