Sudden shutdown after new internal HDD install

After upgrading my internal drive to an HGST 4TB 7200RPM, I've run into a frustrating problem. After about 1 minute and 20 seconds, it suddenly shuts down. I had suspicions that it could be heat related, but I never get it booted long enough to measure the temps. The fans are never really running that hot either. The only way to get another chance at it is to pull the plug and wait the 15 seconds, otherwise all I get is SuperDrive click and HDD spinning, no fans or chime or nothing. HELP!?

Can you give has the last four digits of your serial number so we can correctly identify which exact model you have. It really makes a difference here.

Your systems HD port is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). The HGST drive you've selected DeskStar HD's the 4TB drive is a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive. Sadly, it does not offer any jumpers to slow down. The 3TB drive is a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) which is the only option staying with HGST.

While that can't explain the sudden shutdown after starting up its also possible the power requirement for this bigger drive is also pushing your system. But, you'll need to deal with the HD issue first before we can diagnose deeper.

Do you still have the original HD and is it still working? Try putting it back in for now. Does the system return to what you had before?

Before putting the original HDD back in I checked to make sure problem still existed. It had regressed to just not turning on. I put the original back and did extra detail looking into possible causes like frayed wire or any possible grounding/shorts. Once I was confident nothing visible is at fault I put everything back together but left cover off. Still won't turn on, fan budges for a split second, the HDD still spins up and you hear the SuperDrive click on, but that's it. There is one green LED on while plugged in, three when power switch is pressed.

Bumping for input, I broke it down to minimal system and had no change in status. How would I tell if my issue is the logic board or power supply. LED1-3 are on while power is "on" but LED4 stays off.

Did you use proper ESD practices? It sounds like something on the logic board has burnt. This time of year it doesn't take much to zap a logic board.
