Removing buttons for painting? Wise or unwise?

I really want the big New 3DS XL because of its beautiful screen, however, I do not like the design of the buttons; I do prefer the buttons on the small New 3DS. So my idea was: remove the buttons from the new 3DS XL, paint them and reinsert them. Seeing as I have absolutely no experience in this kind of modification, would that be too big of a risk to attempt?

Thanks in advance for all future answers!

I guess I can add my issue to this as well, I need a guide or something to replace my right shoulder button. All the guides online are either for only the wires and stuff and not the actual button, or are for the older 3ds models, not the new one.

I did an LL to XL case swap and it wasn't so hard but Im now having problems with the home button and mic. not sure if its because of the connectors or what. the buttons are fairly easy to get to though.

If you follow the iFixit guide; you should be able to remove the buttons with ease.
