Auto-brightness toggle is missing from settings. Why?

I recently changed the screen on my iPhone 5, and now the Auto-brightness toggle is completely missing. I can change brightness at will, and there are no other odd behaviors. I have tried reinstalling the screen, swapping out my old camera/sensor assembly and the new one, but that doesn't seem to have any effect.

Even stranger, it appears to be on. The screen gets dim in dark environments and brighter in bright environments. You can even watch the slider move as it adjusts.

After replacing the display (full assembly) on a 5s, I had a situation where the toggle was gone and there was no auto adjustment happening when I changed lighting conditions. I determined this was a hardware failure (specifically the ambient light sensor) and got a new display assembly (including the ambient light sensor). Then, the toggle was still missing, but it was actually auto adjusting the brightness, showing that it actually was working. To fix this, I did a factory reset and restored (from iCloud backup in my case). The toggle came back, and all with that was fine.

Hey Chris. This has been happening to me for a while now and it's starting to annoy me knowing that i have to manually brighten up/down the brightness of the screen due to sunlight. When you reset and restored your iPhone 5s from the iCloud backup, did you lose any personal things on your phone? If so, what were they? I'm busting to reset and restore my phone ASAP for the auto-brightness to come back.

Thanks

Thanks so much. I read that when the ambient light sensor breaks, the option for auto brightness disappears. But what I couldn’t figure out was why after a successful sensor replacement, the option didn’t come back. After reading your comment, I checked and sure enough, my replacement sensor was working even though the option was still gone. A software reset fixed it. Thanks.

Did you ever find out why this happens? I could not get the auto brightness even with a display swap after a restore with the new and working display. Is this a logic board failure?

Nope- It appears that the functionality is gone now. I have nothing to offer but speculation.

In my case the logic board had failed since the display replacement did not work despite a hard reset.

I have this happening on a 5c. Tried numerous hard resets. Light sensor is fine. However if I search the settings it's shown, just can't access it.

Try these.

1. “erase all content and settings”. It's the second option on reset menu in your iPhone.

2. restore it from iTunes. connect your iphone to your pc or mac, open iTunes and you will see restore option.

Ps. in above both cases. You will lose all your data. So make sure you have backed up your data if is important.

I’m sorry if this was already mentioned (I haven’t read all the replies)?? I searched my settings and it showed the file path for the auto-brightness and they moved the “on/off” button!! It’s under Settings/General/Accessibility/Display Accommodations. Hope this helps??

I came across the same issue recently and was searching what other people did to fix it, that’s to say other people were even experiencing the same thing I was?

In my iPhone 5 iOS 10.3.3 with same issue this fix didn't work: auto-brightness in the Accessibility menu was off and I moved on. But still don't work :-(
