Why does my laptop overheat so quickly?

After using my laptop for about 45 minutes it gets extremely hot and I have to shut it down for at least an hour to let it cool off again before I can continue using it. Why is it doing this?

Good day,

I’m having the same issue on my zbook 14 G2.

Is the procedure the same to replace the heatsink, or is there anything different?

Best,

Stephan

There is probably dust in your laptop's ventilation system. Dust buildup prevents optimal airflow through the laptop and causes overheating. Try blowing compressed air into the computer's intake and exhaust vents. If the computer still overheats, you may need to replace the heatsinks and the fan. A heatsink and fan replacement guide can be found here. If you have any other problems with your ZBook, here is a link to a troubleshooting page.

Hi @Stephan Keller

In case it is not the same, here’s the maintenance and service guide for your laptop.

Go to p.90 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove/replace the heat sink.

Also make sure to remove the old thermal paste under the heat sink and processor and replace it with new thermal paste. Old thermal paste can also cause over heating issues and keep the processor from transferring heat properly to the heat sink causing the processor to overheat.

Hi Lizzie

I have experienced a flaw in the design, if the notebook (keyboard) is standing vertically or more than 45 degrees(angle) from horizontal, the heat pipes tend to stop working efficiently to transfer the heat out of the unit.

Not knowing if you have your notebook propped up on anything, I can't confirm if you are experiencing this issue.

My notebook when standing on end, tends to heat up to 90 degrees celsius and then electronically throttles to a very slow state to stop the unit from cooking.

you can also remove the battery and use power via mains if you are at home. other things to do are replace the hard drive with an SSD, these run much cooler.
