How to format new drive?

From what I understand when the new drive is installed and formatted all I need to do is run the install disk. But how do I initially format the new drive?

I know to format a drive I need to go to Disk Utility and this is the instructions or answers I keep reading about when installing a new drive. Well how do I launch Disk Utility when the new drive has no OS?

Thanks

What are the last 4 characters of your serial number, so we can know exactly which version of this you have? Do you own another apple computer? Does the drive you are replacing have the operating system, OSX, on it? Do you have the disk(s) that originally came with the computer?

Install your hard drive. Start your computer and insert the Mac OS X CD.

Restart the computer. Then follow the instructions here.

1)plug cd or usb with new os

2)start the mac holding option key, for enter in boot menu.

3)when instal procedure is ready, go on utility on the top menu, there you will find disk utility for format the new drive....(i hope its ssd :))

ABCellars - I have a 20" Intel core 2 duo, serial# Last 4 is 5VUV, EMC# 2118. Originally it ran Tiger then I upgraded to snow leopard and yes I have the original disks. I still have the original HD installed and it almost full so it's time for an upgrade. I also have a newer MacBook Pro. The new HD I want to install is a WD 2TB.

I hope I explained my situation correctly. The fact that I can't find someone with a similiar problem, probably tells me I'm overlooking something really simple.

I've come across a lot of situations where someone has installed a new HD and then installed the Install Disk and got nothing - they wasn't pressing the the keys or what not. My problem or question is how did these people format their new HD to begin with? I don't think they arrive mac formatted.
