Westinghouse N660G Refrigerator compressor not running?

So my fridge door was accidentally left ajar and the temperature got to 35C. The fridge no doubt tried to cool the entire garage...

So the fans are running but the compressor isn't.

Compressor feels hot and so does the condenser coil. There is a 3 wired device on the condenser. I assume its a thermal trip out. I'm hoping it will reset once it cools down....

Cant locate the manual

Any help appreciated.

Richdave, is that a side by side frost free model. I believe Kelvinator and Westinghouse are identical on this model.

Unplug it for 5 minutes to allow it to reset. Maybe nothing got burned out.

I tried a warm boot and no joy so I emptied it assuming the worst and left it off for a while with a fan blowing into the compressor compartment.. Is that a cold boot? :) I restarted it about 3 hours later and put a temperature probe in the freezer, and to my delight the compressor started running and the temperature started to drop. I now have icy cold beverages to soothe the heat Thanks

The thermal overload for refrigeration compressors is internal,as a result it can take up to 24 hours to have it reset due to the large mass of copper and metal inside the compressors shell, if the shell is hot the interior components are extremely hot. unless the thermal overload is external there is no way to bypass this to test it out.

Richdave, see if this diagram looks like your fridge:-)

Yep thats the one. I found that diagram on the web but it was postage stamp sized and no other info.

download the service manual from here for future use.

Thanks oldturkey03. What is the file format?

Rich, it opens right up. Just do a "save as". ˆI'd use PDF.

Yes Sir, it's a PDF

pull off the lower back panel of the fridge, remove the compressor relay cover. This is the square-ish plastic or bakelite box attached to the side of the compressor.

Test for voltage at the two compressor leads.

If the main compartment in your refrigerator is too warm or too cold and adjusting the temperature controls doesn’t seem to help, first vacuum the compressor and condenser coils. If they aren’t cleaned a couple times a year, the refrigerator won’t be efficient.

A hot compressor is never a good thing to find, the refrigerant vapor entering the compressor helps cool the compressors motor windings. The compressor should not have overheated from running continuously, typically a bad capacitor will cause a high amp draw or being mechanically tight (worn) will cause a thermal overload,as will being low on refrigerant. Once the compressor gets cold, and this will take up to 24 hours,if it still will not run you need to ohm the windings to insure all 3 have continuity to another,

if it does not the overload or compressor winding may be open, however as your compressor was hot to your touch I expect to find it was operating, see that the condenser coil is clean and fan is running.
