Dead Tester iPhone 5.

I do mobile screen repairs on the side and need help with my iPhone 5 that I use as a tester. This is bad of me but I leave it in a small zip tight bag without a screen. The last time I used it to test my delivery of screens it worked fine. Now it seems like there isn't any power going through the phone at all.

I tried:

- with an installed screen, holding down the power and home button for a restart. No luck. This has worked for me in the past.

- plugging in the charger while a attempting a restart. No luck.

- unplugging the current battery and plugged in a new one while attempting to do a restart. No luck.

Thoughts

- I do sometimes screw back on the flex cable mount. I'm wondering if I accidentally screwed back in the screws in the wrong spots.

- when I test the new screens that come in, I don't power down the phone then power up after putting on another screen. Did I blow a fuse?

Hi M,

ESD's a b****. Nylon bags.. not a good idea for storing electronic board. I'd use a shielded bag next time.

Now for the trouble-shoot:

When you plug in a known good charging cable and you have a known good screen installed, do you:

A- See the battery icon (phone detects a charger)? If that's the case, but the iPhone won't restart, try a new battery with some juice in it.

A-1/ If the iPhone works, you most probably have a dead U2, or you pried something off near the battery connector.

A-2/ If the iPhone won't work with a new battery, let us know to try and figure what's next.

B- You see the cable + battery icons (phone does not detect a charger)? In that case, try to replace the charging dock as a first step and let us know what happens.

C- Nothing appears on the screen:

C-1/Let the iPhone charge for 20 minutes or put in a battery with some juice, then connect the iPhone to a laptop to see if it's detected by iTunes. If yes, you have a board that doesn't produce an image or back-light for the LCD.

C-2/ Try to replace the charging dock. If still nothing happens, then simply put you have a "dead logic board." It *could* be awaken back to life, depending on the issue. I'd start with simple easy steps such as examine the board around the battery connector and also around the screen assembly connectors and PMV connector (carefully remove the black "foils"). Look for missing/broken/part-removed components and let us know if you see anything.

I'm not sure what it was but it finally decided to power on. So strange. Thanks for outlining the troubleshooting steps. It was easy to follow.

Perhaps, I'm still relatively new to this, but I've seen very few threads that mention ESD concerns. even the guides bypass ESD concerns. As a lab rat I've been taught to always use ESD straps and protocols.
