After repair, dies if back cover installed (works with cover removed)

Following your repair guide, I successfully replaced my iPhone 4S power flex cable, returning the power button to working order - great!

However, it seems I've done something wrong putting it back together, and can't for the life of me figure out what. Basically, the phone works fine as long as I keep the back cover off. When I replace the cover, the screen goes black (but remains dimly lit); if I press & hold power+home the screen will go off, but it won't come back on even if I remove the back panel and remove/replace the battery - until several hours later, seemingly once the battery has drained completely (the next time I get it back on, I get the 'battery empty' indicator). In other words, after it 'crashes,' if I leave the back panel off for i.e. a day then try it again, I can get the "dead battery screen" back - then I can charge it up and use it. But the moment the back cover is installed, it dies again.

Any idea of what might be messed up?

Thanks very much in advance...!

maybe the little gold contact that is in STEP 4 isnt on right ...

iPhone 4S Power Button Replacement

---- quote

Step 4 — Battery

Pay attention to the pressure contact underneath the top screw of the battery

connector. This may come loose while prying the battery connector from its socket.

i have seen phones where you don't get any video without the back being on (back needs to be on to ground LCD), but this is a new one ...! check if that contact is in properly.... its their for a reason, to complete a circuit of some sort....

That's it!! Not only is it not on right - it's missing entirely. I've no idea how that could've happened, but just ordered a replacement from eBay. Excellent tip :D

Just curious - you knew right away that this was probably the culprit...is that item a likely cause for this kind of problem....?

I know that once , when repairing an LG G2, phone, i was in a panic because the phone was working , except there was no video on the screen.. then i put the back on, (which had some metal contacts in it even though it was plastic)... and it started working perfectly, thus i learned the importance of those contacs, they complete some sort of circuit.... and obviously they are there for a reason, and make contact with some metal exposed in the back cover..... good luck, and let me know if this works once you get the part!!!

Good thought - I already ordered tho, & its just a backup phone, so I'm fine waiting till it gets here. Will just be crossing my fingers till then :)

Is your connection secure? Sometimes the pins on the ribbon are damaged and won't allow a full connection - resulting in power loss or blacked out screen.
