Sleep button not working. Replaced it, still nothing, whats wrong?

I have an iPhone 5 that the sleep/wake power button wasn't working. I read online and did some research and it seems it is either one of two things or both. The button itself could be damaged or the power button/volume/mute flex cable could be damaged. I replaced the sleep/wake power button with no success. Would it just be best practices to replace the flex cable and the button to make sure you get whatever is malfunctioning? Or is there usually one definitive solution one way or the other that you can troubleshoot and pinpoint?

Hi,

Replacing the button would do absolutely nothing. You need to replace the entire flex cable as it is this that controls the actual sleep/wake function, the physical button is there to press the contact on the flex cable itself. :-)

the button that fails is part of the flex.

you can save yourself trouble by just overlaying the new flex and plugging it into the board without installing it. connect battery and see if manually pushing the little actuator on the flex will start the phone. If not, you have a board problem and not a flex/button problem.

in the iPhone 5 there is a common problem of pry damage at battery replacement on the edge of the board near the SIM tray. This can dislodge components that control the lines of the home and power button. I've never seen this present as just a power button failure, but it is possible. it is also possible to damage the power flex connector on the board.

all of these are repairable, but first you need to differentiate a flex problem from a board problem.

Seem to me you just replaced the metal button which in 99.9999% of the cases it will not fix its always the power flex that needs replacing

So here is what I did. The metal back on the home button I put on upside down. So this would be a fare warning to ensuring that the metal back to the home button is installed the right way. Thanks for all your comments!
