No chime, won't boot normally.

I am trying to help my daughter withe her MacBook Pro. (A1229, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, serial ends with QX94, running 10.9.5)

I replaced the HDD about six months ago, and it's been fine, until a couple of days ago. She told me the display was black. Well, I thought I would get it back here and try a different monitor, and maybe reset the PRAM, but it seemed to me that it wasn't booting. I could hear the optical drive if I put a disk in it, and the status light was on solid.

I shut it down, and restarted by holding down the power button for about ten seconds, when it gave a loud, long beep and booted up. So I shut it down again and the same thing happens. It won't boot normally and there is no chime.

I've tried switching out the RAM, I've reset the SMC. Now it won't boot at all, although the status light is on.

Does this sound like a bad logic board?

An update: I tried it with just one RAM module installed, and it chimed, but no display. I tried doing the PRAM thing, and it chimed twice like it should, but still no display, so I guess I'm looking at something else. I don't have the right connector to check it with another display, so I'll go out and get one.

OK, I found a burnt IC on the board, due I think to a loose object that had got in there somehow. I reckon a new board is needed if we are going to keep the Mac. There is one on ebay that claims to be new for a god price. The thing is, how do I find the part number? The only number I can find is 820-2132-A, and the pic the seller has of his board has the same number on it, but he lists the number as 661-4364. Does any of this make any sense?

I bought the one on ebay. Got it for $US300 including postage. Pretty reasonable I thought. Put it in yesterday and away we go. Seems a little slow to boot, but I'm used to my 3.4 GHz i7 iMac, maybe it's normal. But I'll run some clean up.

Sorry for the long winded conversation, but I'm in Australia. I was thinking that I'd try the re-flow option. Is that the right path do you think? I guess I have nothing to lose.

Correct - you have nothing to lose, everything to gain... if possible a pro or shop re-flow is better than a DIY version (though if it's the only option it should work at least for a while - I've done a few the home brew way... and as better than tossing it out it sometimes does work successfully..

Ya sounds like mother board the 661 number is an American part number for the board you can google part number maybe find a cheap one on Line or if have an apple authorized repair center near they can do an exchange with Apple for new board as long as no signs of physical damage ( liquid spill) usually 3 to $400 if liquid damage just find one on eBay and replace yourself or buy part and pay shop to install for you. But most of time it's cheap to buy used Mac then repairing it. I do Apple repairs as a living and I always recommend buying new machines over doing a board unless can find cheap one on line.
