I have an iMac (2006) Core Duo with a dead Airport?

The Airport netowrk connection died. I added an external hard drive, with backup software. The Airport was functioning after the external drive was added. Two days later the system does not recognize the Airport. Within the Networks tab, the Airport is shown to be turned off. The Startup log states the Airport was not found. This is not a server problem but with the built in Airport on the iMac.

I'm guessing at which machine you have. For a positive identification look on the bottom of your stand. 2006 iMac:

Apple iMac "Core Duo" 1.83 17-Inch Specs

Identifiers: Early 2006 - MA199LL - iMac4,1 - A1173 - 2104

Go under the Apple to "about this mac", more info -> network -> airport and see if the airport card is seen. If not, replace it.

Here's how to install it: iMac G5 17" Model A1058 AirPort Extreme Replacement

The airport card is part # 661-3045. This appear to be the standard AirPort Extreme card.
