Sata cable included in the PCIE ssd only version?

I would like the buy a late 2014 Mac Mini with only the pcie ssd installed so i can install my own 2,5 hdd.

Now is my question: does the pcie ssd only version come with the necessary sata cable and the holder for the hdd (i think the bracked holder will be inside because the bracked holder has a place on top of it where the pcie ssd is installed/screwed on)

Hope i can install my own hdd without the need of extra parts when i buy the new mac mini with only a pcie ssd on board.

Thx alot!

First I would review the IFIXIT teardown the teardown crew just released: Mac Mini Late 2014 Teardown.

As to what Apple does with the different configurations its hard to tell what they leave out with a SSD only model.

The drive carrier appears to support both drives one on one side and the other on the other side from the teardown. As to the HD SATA cable being present or not I don't think anyone can tell you until they get their hands on a Mini.

Basically, I think you'll need to wait to find out or take the risk and let us know what you discover!

@Dan, sorry forgot to say, you will need to buy a SATA flex cable, which is the same as what was used in previous years for other dual drive macmini upgrades.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Mine is supposed to arrive on the 24th.....

Maxed out the RAM and the processor, but went with the 256gb ssd vs. the fusion drive.

I also ordered an HDD and the ifixit extra hdd kit from amazon.com (all returnable).

I'm a little nervous....do I invalidate the warranty the minute I take out the torx screws?

Having second thoughts about whether I should have just ordered the OEM fusion drive instead, but with only a 120gb ssd, I'm sure I'd be running off the hdd a lot of the time :-/

I'd give it about a 50/50 shot that I either let you guys know how it goes on the 24th, or I wimp out and leave everything packaged up until I hear more (writing this now from a mid 2007 21" imac, that I put a Hackintosh fusion drive in that I can't even watch my gopro movies on b/c they jump all over the place)

Popping the cover to check things out shouldn't invalidate your warranty.

Thanks for the answer - popping the cover won't do me in even though it's tamper proof? And if so, removing stuff to get to the drive caddy? Replacing the drive? At what point does it invalidate the warranty? And is it a blanket invalidation, or does something have to go wrong that's related - I could totally see them just saying "Nope, you could have discharged ESD or whatever once you opened the cover" - and with due respect, what's your source?

Basically it's a $1,400 question so I apologize if the followup questions seem pushy, but I don't think I want to take an anonymous internet post at face value.

If there was a seal across a screw that you had to rip off then I would worry. Apple just used screws here with hard to find tools to open (no seals). I would take a magnifying glass across all of the images the IFIXIT team has posted on their teardown. Thats what I do when reviewing things before I decide on putting my hard earned money down. BTW I don't take offense you should question everything! Double check from multiple sources as well.

You will need a TR6 Torx Security screwdriver will be needed. I don't think you'll need to go further than popping off the fan unit (see the IFIXIT teardown Step 6 to see what you need to here. If you jump to step 13 image were the HD carrier is being removed you can see the SATA ribbon cable sticking up that would attach to the logic board. If your unit has this cable you will see it. If not then you'll need to order the part.

As to ESD I would strongly recommend when opening any system to use proper ESD protocols. Lastly, Apple is not going to rake you over the coals retiring the system if you decide to, unless you make a mess scratching and denting things. Only you know your skills here if this is your first time I would cancel the order and wait until someone has discovered whats up.

Anyone with a PCIe only Mac Mini that can confirm if it comes with the SATA cable? If it does not, any ideas on how to get it?

From the three tear downs I have reviewed, Apple does not supply the spare cable. You will need to order it from someone. I would wait a bit when the dust has settled down and take a look then at the parts houses like the IFIXIT store.

Thanks Dan. I decided to buy the HDD only model and replace it with a 1TB SATA SSD (Crucial M550) that I got for a good price on eBay. Fusion Drive as a no go for me due to only having 128GB of SDD.

door

Oh...why didn't you just spring $800 for the 1TB SSD from Apple? :p

door

Rimsky - Did you note the drive Apple is using is only a 6.0mm unit Vs the 7.5mm your replacement drive is? I don't know if your drive will fit the limited space.

door

The fusion drive come with a 128g pcie ssd and a 9.5mm sata hdd.So i think it's ok to replace it with other 9.5mm ssd.
