How to fix "Charging not supported by this accessory" problem?

I'm trying to get a used iPhone 3GS to charge properly but continually get the "Charging is not supported by this accessory" message. The phone is running iOS 6.1.6. The seller said it had been jail-broken at one point but that that had been undone (restored via DFU mode).

I've tried three cables: an Amazon branded one, a Belkin and an Apple (from an iPhone 1). All gave me the "not supported" message. However, all work fine with my other iPhone 3GS (never jail-broken).

These are the other things I've tried but have proved fruitless:

- Restoring the iPhone,

- using an Apple USB wall charger (directly, not through a cradle) with all three of the above cables

- Installing two different dock assemblies

- Installing a new battery bought from ifixit

- shorting the data lines of the cable (saw it on Youtube) on the phone side of the cable

Interestingly, cooling the phone either in the fridge or on an ice-pack before charging seems to increase the chances of a successful charge, but I worry about the condensation that builds up on the phone as it warms up.

Sometimes the phone trickle-charges despite the error message but other times it does not. If it does, it usually takes overnight to do so. Sometimes if I jam the cable hard or stick it in partially or wonky, it’ll charge ok without the error message for maybe 20 seconds. Rarely will it charge all the way without the "charging not supported" message.

At this point, I can only conclude that there's either there's a motherboard hardware issue or that Apple's tight-fisted attempts to destroy functionality of 3rd party accessories that somehow don't meet its hardware standards via software/firmware updates has essentially bricked this phone.

Any suggestions for further troubleshooting would be appreciated.

Like I mentioned, I tried two other brand new dock connectors (installed the entire dock assembly). I did clean out the old connector by first removing any debris (there wasn't much) and scrubbing with 99% isopropyl alcohol. No luck with any of that.

I have this problem with my 3gs. The only way I can get it to charge is to turn the screen off and plug it into a computer without iTunes installed.

jsnyen, this is usually a docking error. Check your dock connector for any broken, bend or corroded pins or debris. You can try to use isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush to clean the dock connector. If that does not work then you'll need to replace the dock connector. in the iPhone. Here is the guide for it. Of course, you do want to make sure that you charger is appropriate and that you have a working cable. Some aftermarket cables can cause this as well. Hope this helps, good luck.

When you replaced the dock connector, did you check the SMD components around the dock connector? If the cooling seems to help, you are having issues with a solder crack on anyone of those.

All those components are pretty tiny but I gave them a glance with a 10x lupe and couldn't find anything obvious. What would I do anyway? Reflow? I don't have a reflow station in any case. I threw in the towel today and bought an iPhone 6. I'll sell my two 3gs for parts and buy myself a coffee or something. Thanks for your responses.

I think the culprit is within their updates which allow Apple to make whatever they want obsolete and control how often you want to buy the newest Iphone. Yes We are all stupid to think otherwise

I would like someone smart enough to find a way to revert back to a previous ios where this problem is not present.

its like your Blu-ray player saying it does not support Blu-ray discs but will now support blu-ray2 discs.

Apple sucks @%^... I connected iPad (1) with a 'non-supported' 30-pin cable to PC and restored it. Everything is working fine. For how long?
