Some shrews on the out side are like 6 pointed stars and I guessing there other types inside, going on videos of other Mac repairs I've seen.

I blow the USB ports when I tried plugging in a DVD player and now they are unresponsive. A few repair places said I'd need to replace the logic board, but they also said it would cost more than its worth. Deeper investigation of my own has shown the board to be considerably cheaper than they suggested.

For future reference, the "6 pointed stars" you refer to are Torx screws, which are widely used in the electronics industry. iFixit's 54 Bit Driver Kit and Pro Tech Screwdriver Set include screwdrivers for most of the Torx screws you're ever likely to encounter.
