Can i upgrade the iMac[ 2010] 3.06 intel core 2 duo Processor to a Quad one ? they use the same socket ,lga 775, i know it will fit , but i dont know if it work, cuz apple In 10.6.3 YET not supports that processor BUT what happen with a KEXT or a custom extencion ? [ they use those in Hackintosh PC's and they say they kik &^$ ] will it work that way, following the same theory ? or how can i chane the BIOS in the iMac? so it can recognize the Quad processor . 3 years ago i upgrade the processor in my old iMac intel 2.0 to a 2.8 extreme, and works like a charm. sorry for my english

Nope

from where you are the next processors are the i3, 5, 7 and would require major buss and firmware support.

Note that this is for the 27" iMac. If you see the order options, this model is offered with a i7 2.9GHz CPU. So you could replace your i3 or i5 with the same CPU. This CPU draws 95 watt while the 21.5" draws 74watt. Even if the i7 2.9GHZ will fit the ZIF socket of the 21.5" it can not take the 95watt. Believe me, I tried, and fried my logic board :-) You could replace an i3 with the i5 that was offered with the 21.5"

3.6 GHz Intel "Core i5" I5-680 (Clarkdale) processor

but I don't think you will get more than 10% better performance.

Matt do you have any links on this? Have you taken any pictures or run any benchmark tests. We'd all like to see the results. Could you give us the specific machines you've done this on and which processors you used along with the socket types? I've done some upgrades on the CoreDuo machines. I'm working on getting 10.7 to work correctly on them now. I use xbench for testing. Here's the free download.

@Matt Macl

How could you possibly replace the C2D with a C2Q?
