Broken / cracked clutch cover

My clutch cover is cracked in the middle and I need to replace it. I went to the apple store and they told me I needed a whole new display... This seems absurd for just a clutch cover. Is this true?

No you shouldn't need a whole new display if only the plastic cover is broken.

As this is such a new system parts for it are hard to find. Here's a link to the previous model part Apple P/N 076-1441 - MacBook Air 13" Clutch Cover - Mid 2013. It might be the same as these systems are very close.

It is still a bit of work to replace it, follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014 Display Assembly Replacement. Once you get the display off you can then swap out the clutch cover.

I still want to know whether or not I could take this to apple... or is the only option fixing it myself??

Well... Both. Did you think the part broke due to a fault in the part or did you bang it causing it to break? Apple will ask that question and if they think its your fault then they have the right to refuse the repair under warranty. I might add Apple is known to be soft on refusing even if its clearly your fault under warranty. But, you may need to help them a bit here. How you approach them can make a big difference. Be on the edge of tears and pick a the morning hour to visit the Apple Store when its less crowded and they are fresh from a day off. Even if they say no politely ask for the service manager and then the store manager. Again have a tear rolling down your face and don't be confrontational ;-} Hopefully you won't need to go that far. While it is not pretty you may need to live with it for a while until the parts are available (if its different than the previous version) if they say no. And don't go to an authorized service center until you have worn-out the Apple Store route.
