My phone's side buttons broken?

My phone is literally going nuts because it starts saying out of nowhere on the screen it goes from ringer on ringer silent and while it says that it vibrates. Has anyone had this problem? I read other similar issues with the side buttons ,but it is not quite like that.

well the mute switch is on the same cable as the vol up/down, so i would start with replacing that
