display on/off-sensor placement / clamshell mode

Hi .. I want my MacBookpro to run in permanent clamshell mode without needing to close the display. I thought I could just trick the open/close sensor system or so

any idea? where is that bugger, in the hinge?

Located on the back of the right side of the keyboard, about in the middle.

It is commonly called a reed switch. By sliding a paperclip along the bezel bottom you can locate the magnet in the bezel. Placing a magnet on the top case in the correct position will "sleep" the display.

Good Luck,

Genius. Trying to figure this out for years. Even the IT guys I was working for didn't know.

I have a MBP with a busted screen (backlight working). It's hooked up to a studio diplay that is configured as main monitor in system preferences. The MBP display doesn't do a thing now, neither open or closed. No need to trick any sensors.

Once the external display is configured as main all windows are displayed on it.

ok .. it seems to be in the screen on the right side of the camera and the little hook thingy that keeps the cover down. attaching a magnet there sends my MacBookpro to sleep

Had this happen on an A1278; couldn’t figure out why. Magnetized USB connectors were the problem. Demagnetize them with something like this: https://amzn.to/2CEM4pJ

There are 4 strong N or S domains on the upper display border by the camera, starting about 2” from the outer edge of the display clamshell and ending about 3-4” inches in, on both right and left sides. This makes me think there’s either 1 or 2 clamshell sensors (hall or reed type) in the palm rest on either side of the trackpad.

pmset -g log:

Display is turned off

Entering Sleep state due to 'Clamshell Sleep' …
