AppleCare declined service

My girlfriend purchased the above laptop a couple months ago and is already having problems with the track pad in click mode (have to press extremely hard). We took it to the mac store they tried a minor adj that worked for about an hour and then we had to take it back at which time they told us if it's anything related to water that her 300.00 apple care purchase is void. now, what's to stop them from saying that it's water no matter what it is and how are we to argue that it's not if they say it is? is there an additional plan that covers everything like any NORMAL expensive insurance plan would. if i have full coverge on my car and i wreck it, they pay for it! anyways (i'm obviously rather upset!), i'm told the track pad with labor would be around 1200.00 so any suggestions would be appreciated!

Gentle Ben (haha, your pic is what i'd like to do to mac!)

It's at the Mac store right now. If the warranty is void I'll certainly let you know what the number is. Thanks so much for the response!

What's up with the warranty anyway, what's the point?! Can't they just put a dab of water on the sensor and say, "oh, sorry!" I've been hearing nothing but horror stories with people spending 2k and up on these Mac's and having expensive problems from the get go or right after the warranty expires! I love the Mac software and OS but this is pretty pathetic! We have an old HP Pavilion zv6000 that's slow as @^^^ but still running like a champ as far as the hardware is concerned! ok, rant over, thanks again!

Hello again! Just as a follow-up:

There's nothing specific that prevents a Mac repair guy from doing such a thing, but I've not known one who would do such a horrible thing. 2 perspectives on this: 1) We have had dealings with many Mac Geniuses and authorized repair guys, and they have all been helpful and ethical. 2) What's in it for them (at the Mac store) to do such a thing? I think they would rather have an easier fix than to put some tainted money in Apple's pocket.

These are my thoughts!

You'd think, but from my experience they aren't very competent or knowledgeable.

I was mainly just upset and ranting Ben, 2K for a tiny 13in mac, i just expect a lot more quality! they did replace the track pad under warranty. there is a weird "warning" in the console though. know anything about that? thanks for all the info!

All newer Mac laptops have little white circles called liquid damage indicators in strategic places (upper case, logic board, etc). If these circles touch water, they change color (usually to red).

When the mac store opens up the machine, they will check these liquid damage indicators. If white, no problem! If red, no luck!

Either way, you can fix the problem yourself for MUCH cheaper than $1200. What is the model number on the bottom of the laptop?

I hope this helps!

Well, like all warrenty/insurance/whatever, it comes down to trust. Do you trust that your 100% silk shirt isn't 50% silk 50% polyester? It all comes down to trust.

I hear ya, but trust and megacorps don't seem to go to well in the same sentence! what's your experience with mac hardware?

You got to trust someone- as I said, everyone has the potential to rip you off in life, so you have to trust some of them- or life a caged life of paranoia.

I happen to for the most part trust apple here, they are a large reputable company, and you probably will end up paying them money, so they have incentive. Don't trust them if you don't like, but it's your choice if you don't want to.

YMMV, but I've had nothing but excellent service from Apple under AppleCare. In my latest 2 experiences, both with machines with less than a month remaining on the 3yr warranty they took care of my problems (in one case they went way beyond what I was expecting from them)

My several previous Macs, iPods and iPhones all had either no problems or were well taken care of by the warranty. I trust Apple much more than I would many other manufacturers.

anyhow good luck fixing your trackpad
