Won't boot, fan runs but nothing else...

I'd like to fix this myself if I can; chances are I can't, but I'd like to try. Anyway, I have to hold the power button for a second or two, and then all that happens is the fan(s) start running, louder than they ever did when it was working. Nothing appears on the screen, although it does appear to refresh when I hit the power button, while still remaining black.

The battery has been shot for a while, been running off the power cable. It was unreliable, though, and now the inside of the round plug looks kind of burnt, so I got a new one. Can't help but wonder if my DC card is damaged as well.

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

If the battery is dead remove it and try a PMU reset and a PRAM reset then post the result as a comment in my answer.

Thanks, but neither of those make a difference. I can hear something spinning up before the fan starts, maybe the hard drive. But my power cord had been acting funny for a while now, should have replaced it earlier. The outlet I usually plug it into is on the other side of my bathroom wall, and almost every time I turn off a switch in the bathroom, the power to my laptop would cut out. Anything else plugged into that wall was fine, it must have been the adapter. With the battery dead, the laptop would just die instantly without power, and that happened quite a few times. That makes me think it might be a DC card issue.
