After Hard Drive install can't get to Time Machine to restore

I just installed a new 1T hybrid hard drive in my MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009.

I'm having trouble getting to my external hard drive with my time machine back up to do a restore.

I used an old dvd os 10.5 to boot up and after OX install and reboot I join my network and select my time machine disc and it shows a dialog box that is checking disc and it just spun for several hours......I gave up

Started over by moving my usb external disc and plugging straight into my laptop......but it does not show up.

This 1T hard drive came w/and external case and some tools.

I thought the case was for turning my old drive into an external usb drive and now I'm wondering if I should have cloned my old drive onto the new drive before the install.

Totally stuck at this point
