Why wont laptop stay on for more than a second?

My MacBook Pro will shut off within 2 seconds of pressing the power button (the sleep light and fans will come on for a second or two then it will shut off). If I hold the power button down, the light and fans will come on, and about 3 seconds later the sleep light will flash on and off very fast for about a second, and then the whole thing will shut off again. If I take the ram out it will do the 1 beep thing and stay on beeping until I turn it off. Also if the ram isn't seated right it will do the 3 beep thing and will stay on. This leads me to believe it is the logic board and not the dc board that is the problem as it will stay on if the ram is not installed, but somewhere in the boot sequence right after the ram check something is going wrong that turns the computer off. Is this correct or is there something I am missing? Thanks!

Liquid Damage?

Dropped? Is there a chime? No chime means failing POST (power on self test)

What you are doing by holding the power button down is forcing a "reset" of the machines System Management Controller (SMC)

I agree there's a hardware problem, but it could be anything from POST.

There is no chime. It has been dropped in the past, which I assume is what did the damage, but that was over 6 months ago. What hardware parts are involved in the POST? DC board, logic board, RAM? Do you know the order of the self test? (for example the issue seems to be after the RAM check, as it will give the no ram "beep" if the ram is removed) Thanks for the help!

So in the end, I sent the logic board into a place to repaired, and it was that a connection to the GPU had come loose under the chip. They did a reflow (melted the solder again) and it worked like a charm after that.

This machine has the Nvidia GPU and is probably covered under the Apple Recall program. See www.nvidiasettlement.com
