iPhone 5 powers on but in recovery mode but won't recover

Hello there,

I had a good friend and customer come in today with their iPhone 5 (A1429) and they are telling me that while the battery was low and they plugged it in, the phone wouldn't charge and it rebooted in recovery mode.

I took it and tried doing recovery but I get error 9. The process goes well to about a reboot, shows the apple logo and the process line, but then half the screen goes black and it reboots asking to be connected to iTunes again, which iTunes shows error 9.

Any suggestions? I have yet to open it but I was thinking that possibly its the connector? as error 9 refers to loss of power on usb. I might be wrong and thought maybe someone here had similar issue.

I've also thought about a bad logic board but I would hate to tell my client / friend that he can try and locate one that clean for $300..

Any suggestions are welcome.. I've done all kinds of resets, and different computers for the recovery with no success.

Thank you in advance.

Try a restore with a new battery if it's faulty it will not boot to main screen hence why it's always throwing you in recovery mode

Thanks for the tip, I'll give that a try. Never thought about battery being bad throwing the thing into recovery but it makes sense since it happened at putting it to charge and it wouldn't.

Well, new battery and the same thing. Boots into Recovery. Doing recovery either I get error 9 or in DFU i get this device is not eligible for this software or recovery... something in those terms.

Any further ideas? Error 9 refers to the USB disconnection, could it be the port itself on the iPhone 5?

That's the worst the about troubleshooting you needa try all parts to see what the problem is

It's the port. Most likely check for shorts in the wiring

just did, replaced the port and still same thing. :( I'm running out of ideas. It does go into recovery and when I finally get it out of it, it just keeps rebooting and the way it reboot, the apple logo is on for about 20 - 30 seconds and then it looks like it freezes, screen breaks into lines, half is in red, half is in white.. and right as that happens, it reboot... and all over again, white screen, apple logo, .. for 30 seconds, screen breaks into tiny lines, red half and white background the bottom part.. and reboot. I'm thinking Logic Board.

Did you ever fix it? I have the exact same problem on my iphone 6

The only thing you can really do is put that board into a known good housing and try to restore using an original Apple usb cable.

If not, then scan the board very carefully for physical damage.

If it fails both these tests, then that is the end of the line--most of the time.
