Why does the hairdryer just stop working?

My mother was using the hairdryer and she said it just turned off and wouldn't turn back on. She can't figure out what is happening and I don't know anything about hairdryers, can someone please tell me what is wrong with it? Also, what can I do to make sure this not happen again, because my mom is very bad with these types of things and I live too far away to drive to help her every time this happens.

Overheating may be the cause of your problem. Using your hair dryer for more than 7-10 minutes can cause it to automatically shut off. When this happens, your mom should unplug the device and let it cool down, preferably in a cool environment for 2-3 minutes. After cooling down, the dryer can return to normal use. The reset button may need to be pushed after the dryer is plugged back in.

Where Is the reset button

door

Hi @ Marshall McNeely,

According to the user manual the reset button is on the plug on the cord.

If the button has popped out it has to be pushed back in again.

It sits flush on the back of the plug if it hasn't tripped.

Hair dryers automatically turn off if you use them for too long because it will overheat. If it turns off , all you need to do is wait a few minutes for it to cool down and it will work again

There can sometimes be a build up of ingressed hair in the tunnel that holds the heater element and or around the fan motor spindle that overheats the motor and trips the internal safety switch. Carefully remove all hair obstruction from inside. For safety reasons the micro switch will shut the unit down so allow it to coil down and try later.

first thing to check is always the plug fuse. something a lot of people forget to do. always change the fuse first when completely dead.

if thats ok, open up and check the on off switch contacts are still ok as they tend to bend or snap off over time.

anything inside that needs changing will need soldering..

sounds right but a bit over my head and i reckon most people's... i do have a soldering gun or whatever here though -where would i get such a fuse?! omg.

honestly, i was turning it on briefly to warm inside the bed cuz my electric mattress warmer stopped working. the lights come on but it doesn't warm up. and in the plug one of the prong thingies is down and i wondered if that had something to do with it. LOL a whole nother issue. man though, i LOVE my electric mattress warmer when it works. costs like a lightbulb and i can practically turn the heat off while in bed, just warm up the room an hour before getting up! i try to tell everyone about that. i guess it would only really matter to poor people :/

A lot of people give the same reason for an answer on here. The Real question Should be... WHY, is it overheating? The Answer is simple... either people don't bother to clean off the outer and Inner air intake screens (like on the Conair's), or, over time... dust and other tiny debris build up within the "tunnel" where the heating element is, thereby restricting the airflow which causes an excess buildup of heat, that it cannot get rid of, due to restricted airflow.

Either way... a clogged air intake screen (most likely culprit) or a clogged heating element "tunnel" restricts airflow past the heating element, causing excess heat.

One way to easily know if it's in the heating/exhaust "tunnel" is... the air will have a "burnt" smell to it.

If it's a clogged air intake screen.. there will be a noticeable reduction in airflow.... CLEAN the air intake screens... it's very simple, if not... then read your Owners Manual on "how to" maintain your dryer... it's Not "rocket science". : )
