hello everyone,

i think i found the solution for for screen blackout in nexus 5.. even i encountered the same problem.. i was freaked out.. but this trick did work for me.. clear the cache memory..:)

1.Press and hold Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until you see something other than Google on the screen.

2.You should see a large arrow at the top of the screen.

3.Tap Volume Down repeatedly until you see Recovery in the arrow. Then tap the Power button

4.You should see an android on his back, chest open with a red triangle and exclamation mark.

While holding Power button tap Volume Up once then release Power.

5.You should now see a list of items at top of screen.

6.Tap Volume Down until the item to erase or wipe the cache partition is highlighted. Then tap Power button to initiate.

7.Status messages will appear at the bottom of the screen. Be patient – it can take 10-15 minutes to complete. When done restart the Nexus.

I haved the same probleme it's come because the connection between the mother board and the usb wire was baddly plug i have to maintain the connections and restart my phone (hold second the power button) if this solved the problem you can add a lot duct tap to make pressure between the connections and the duct tape. Bye sry for my english

This is the correct solution. I placed a folded piece of paper over the connector before screwing the motherboard shield back into place. Like the duct tape, this forces a good connection on the daughterboard to motherboard ribbon connector.

door

Can you post a photo of where you have positioned the paper?

door

The issue is from the poor connection from the flexible cable that runs from the bottom of the phone, where the digitizer/screen connect, and the motherboard at the top. I placed a thin piece of foam over top of the connection point and then installed the shield plate on top of the foam. Note it is the long narrow connection next to the battery connection which is the culprit. Problem fixed. Thanks for the help.

go to ebay or amazon and order a new digitizer .....lcd...... and frame assembly ...... do not buy from china it takes too long to get !!! then go online to youtube and watch one of many cell phone break down videos on your particular device. It will take you step by step to switch out the assembly. If you are not familiar with cell phone repair then this will be the easiest way to fix. Make sure before you assemble you have to make sure you double check all conections ......screws...... wire lead runs....... and snap connects.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE GLASS ALONE IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH CELL PHONE REPAIR !!

It is way too easy to damage lcd ......warp the frame ...... and waste a lot of time and money !!

All other function work, however. I can plug it into my computer and see all the stuff on there. Anyone know a way to run diagnostics off of the computer?

door

in that case you will have to down load a tool kit for your nexus and watch a vid on that for instruction. This problem is common with the nexus 5. I think they must have been in way too much of a hurry to put out the phone that they failed to work out all the bugs and kinks. worst case scenerio you will probably have to purchase a new mother board and install it. This is an easy fix but does cost money. You could buy a used broken phone and pull the mother board out of it for repeir, but you will have to make sure its unlocked to a carrier and not from a water damaged or excessively broken phone. You can sell parts to retrieve money back on the purchase though.

Hopefully this offered up some solutions in a worst case scenerio situation if you can't seem to patch it with a tool kit. most of the time it can be patched if you can see it on a comp. monitor.

good luck

door

Dude you just need to change the dock cable....that's the only solution.

door

I did that and still black

door

I replaced the charging dock but it doesn't work. The problem is in the main motherboard, you need to take your phone to a repair shop. The folded paper almost doesn't work, you need to position it in a right place, which is almost impossible because if it moves just a bit it will stop working again.

I have answer to this!

I have had this problem like 3 months now and i finally fixed it.

Basically what i did was that i bought a broken nexus 5 (only the screen glass was broken) and tried to swap every part one by one. The one that was not working was the main dock!

It is a cheap fix, like 10£ on Ebay.

I am writing this post because anyone else haven't.

I hope that someone sees this.

I now copy this message to all other threads so people can fix their nexus 5's :)

PS:as you can probably tell English isn't my first language.

Hi Olen,

I´ve already ordered a new display +digitizer from aliexpress and still the backlight does not come on. (phone was originally dropped in water, then backlight stopped working)

Could you please be more specific about which part I need to replace? What is the "main dock" and can I purchase this part seperately? (broken nexus 5s are still too expensive for this experiment)

Thanks

door

Sorry billy i should have been more specific its the usb dock, the yellow one. Here is some links. ReplaceBase: https://goo.gl/YD4ZMT ,

Ebay: http://goo.gl/wsb2EE ,

Etradesupply: http://goo.gl/7DukHY ,

iFixit: https://goo.gl/yJhoHQ .

I hope this helps.

door

Hi Olen,

thanks for the quick reply - I assumed you were talking about the "mainboard" and just had a little reflow experiment in the oven the other night. Didn´t help but at least it didn´t seem to make it worse either.

So that part you now mentioned is a lot more reasonable to fix pricewise. Thanks! I will definitely try that.

(maybe I´ll try a reflow of that part first... can´t get worse :))

door

Reflow didn´t work. Phone still works - Still no backlight and most of the plastic parts in the connector socket melted and can´t be put together correctly because of that ;-).

Replacement part ordered.

I had the exact same issue so what i did is blow it out. took a small knife. and scored the male and female parts of the connector put it back to gather and the screen seems to be working. mind you only did it 20 minutes ago so we will see what happens :-)

Hope this helps someone.

Also for you will notice decreased auto when talking on the phone. advise for that is to take the mic cover off. and use some type of cleaner. "I used water which isn't the best" and cleaned and the cover and the vent. fixed the auto issue so far we will see what happens with that as well

Hi everyone,

I had the same problem as described- my screen crashed, but it worked normally for some time. Then, suddenly it showed me some colourful static images and occasionally lines, plus touch stopped working. I figured it's the crashed LCD, so I've replaced it (whole LCD with digitizer)- still a black screen. Imagine the way I felt when I turned the phone on after a few days without it, like a child who receives a Christmas gift- and still black.

I did some research and found some info on connectors- pushed them hard and well, I got the image back. Unfortunately, it wasn't for good- after a few minutes it disappeared, also the touch was going totally crazy (the ghost syndrome) or didn't work at all. Important thing- I could manipulate the screen by pressing the back of my phone near the letters "u" and "s"- sometimes it worked, sometimes not. I figured (judging by the location where pressing worked) it had to be the USB flex plug, that connects it to the mainboard, so I decided to check it. I've opened up the phone and took off the upper plastic part held with screws- and I've put some pieces of paper in there, to apply constant pressure (directly on the plug and another place where pressing seemed to affect the screen), then reassembled it, and... voila. It worked. Try it- maybe it'll help You too, You have nothing to lose in the end :)

Can confirm, I needed a piece of paper on top of the pins just below the battery (daughter board) to force the lcd connection to stick. It was pretty loose, but I thought it had seated the first time, then I had just a black screen when I switched it on. Stuck the paper under there as advised and it worked first time! Fingers crossed its a permanent (non flammable) solution!

Hi all,

I've had this problem since 1,5 years now and I found a solution. I already ordered a new flex cable on ebay, but that didn't work. This is only the case when the backlight comes on but the phone doen't show anything on the screen.

Yesterday I tried to fix a ylod on my playstiation 3 and I had to reball the graphics card with a heat gun. After that was fixed, I thought: why not try this on my Nexus 5?

So I took out the motherboard and first warmed up the whole board slightly with the heat gun set to low to prevent localized thermal expansion. The board should feel warm but not too hot.

Now place the motherboard on a flat surface (like an old book or something) and place the heat gun about 5 cm above the ribbon cable connector and heat it on low setting for about 20 seconds. Watch out that the plastic ring in the vibration motor hole doesn't start to burn (as it did in my case). When you're done, make sure you DON'T TOUCH the board until it it's completely cooled down. Place it back in your phone. Make sure you place all the connectors back (I forgot the battery as it slipped under the board) and plug in power.

My phone is working like it never stopped!

You got it! It works. I repaired two phones this way. Heat Air is the easy solution! In my case I used hot air heatgun 350°C and 10sec on row near edge of the board. The solder melts and at that time PUT slight PREASSURE down to the connector for few seconds! It makes the legs got proper contact to the pads on the board.

Update

I sent mine back to lg for warranty repair and they sent it back unrepaired saying the motherboard was bent. As soon as I got it back I opened it up and reseated all the connections including the battery connection. Give it a try.

unfortunately i cannot permanently fix this coil..now i need to replace it..

Yup! I had the same problem....it's because of the dock cable....using otg etc. which consumes power from your phone affects the dock cable of your nexus5 which results in frequent black out of display due to the damaged dock cable. There is only one solution to this problem, change the dock cable. And try not to use any external drives which consumes power from your nexus5.

There could be a simple solution too. I had same issue, screen will go black once locked (or auto lock). Phone will remain on, but nothing will be visible. Removing battery and re-inserting only will bring display back.

Now it’s fixed. Here is the solution. Check your brightness level, if it is reduced to zero, increase a bit and set it. Lock your phone and unlock - you see no more display black issue.

P.S: This is applicle only for display changed mobiles
