when i click the volume buttons, the screen just says ringer, the sound doesn't work for spotify, youtube, and it's doesn't ding for texts or notifications, but if i set up an alarm, or go into setting and mess with the sounds and alerts bar, the sound works. i don't know what's going on and i need help!

Be sure your phone has been currently updated
Is your phone in silent mode? Check the side of the phone where the vibrate/silent button is located. Also be sure to go over your settings as well to ensure everything is set up correctly

I have had this problem before usually means the iPhone is in docking mode and would need a replacement dock connector.
Before replacing this part try cleaning the port with an unused tooth brush and some pure alcohol.

I'm having the same problem thinks its got to do with the new iOS on iPhone 4s

I normally isn't a problem with the IOS. Clean out the charging dock with a clean toothbrush, there should be no need to use rubbing alcohol. That is what worked for me.
