Why can't I remove the ram?
I'm trying to remove the ram based on ifixit instructions but it won't come out. What am I doing wrong?

Of course your remembered step 2. The connector can still be a very tight fit. Use the spudger to chimney or lever one side back then the the other by pressing/pulling on the edges (notches) until the connector releases the chip.
If you have a third hand to pull on the middle of the chip you'd be better off.
