No Zif cable lock / no sound

I added Ram to the mac mini , but in the process, while disconnecting the Zif cable I removed & busted the zif cable lock. I since bought some Kapton tape & tried to tape it down into place , but get the same results. No sound. The Speaker out symbol is greyed out..No output/input devices found. I even tired to connect an external speaker using the audio jack.. Any suggestions? other then USB speakers ( i haven't tried ) Perhaps showing how the cable could be taped down?

Help .

thanks. Suzanne

The cable you are having problems with has nothing to do with the sound. It is the connector for the optical drive. I suspect that you have failed to fully seat the audio board. Go back and reseat it. Here's how: Mac mini Model A1176 Audio Board Replacement

Also, after you have reseated, let us know if there is no sound. Go under the Apple to about this Mac > more info > system report > Hardware > Audio and let us know what it shows.

Thank you for pointing that out. I reseated the audio board and there is still no sound. I had never removed it when I installed the Ram. And I have since installed 4 others..Under Audio - No Built - in Audio.

That doesn't sound so good…Perhaps the Audio board went bad ?

If the board is not showing up it may well have gone bad. See if you can boot up from your original system installation disk holding down the "D" key and run diagnostics on your machine and let us know your results.

Thank you for getting back to me. I had to bring the equipment back to the client, since everything else worked. I will go ahead and order the audio board, Assuming thats the problem.

So I was able to run a Diagnostics and still no sound.Under Audio Built in - says No Built in Audio. Do I replace the Audio Board? If so , where can I get one? Or can you recommend a USb external speaker, if will that work?

Thanks for the email. Try this: boot up from an external USB or Firewire drive with a system like 10.5 on it. Check to see if it now sees an audio board. I believe failure to even see an audio board will cause failure of an external speaker. The audio board is Apple part # 922-7613, the speaker kit (which plugs into the board) is part # 076-1211

Did you ever find a solution. I did the same thing, broke the zif cable lock and tried taping the cable in place. No audio device found. Would love to know how you resolved in the end. So far I've just been living without audio but would like to find a solution.
